Should You Watch It?
Watch it if you enjoy
- Watch if you follow the Dragon Ball Heroes card/video game line and want the promotional ONA that adapts the Prison Planet arc from Universe Mission.
- Watch if you have finished Dragon Ball Super through the Universe Survival arc and want an optional alternate continuation in a separate Heroes-focused reality.
- Watch if you enjoy short, roughly 10-minute action/adventure installments featuring martial arts, superpowers, and time-manipulation themes.
It may not suit you if
- May not suit viewers following only the core Dragon Ball saga, since this ONA unfolds in a separate Heroes-focused reality and is not required for main-continuity understanding.
- May not suit those seeking Akira Toriyama's direct involvement or mainline canon, as Toei Animation produced it without him.
- May not suit viewers who dislike promotional tie-ins or the late-run shift to a CG movie format made when 2D staff were needed for Dragon Ball Daima.
This automatic starting point balances the series length, pacing, time commitment, and available AniList community signals. Editors can override it when firsthand knowledge suggests a better entry point.
Why It Connects With Audiences
Why people love it
- It gives Dragon Ball Heroes game fans a narrative adaptation of the Prison Planet arc from Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Universe Mission.
- Its alternate-reality scenarios and time-manipulation/time-travel themes can offer familiar franchise action outside the main Dragon Ball Super path.
- The finished 56-episode run from 2018 to 2024 provides a compact, roughly 10-minute-per-episode promotional series for dedicated franchise followers.
Common criticisms
- As a promotional companion to a card/video game, its story can feel subordinate to marketing rather than a standalone mainline narrative.
- Its placement as an optional alternate continuation means events may not matter to viewers following only the core Dragon Ball Super saga.
- The late switch to a promotional CG movie format, reportedly due to 2D animation staff being needed for Dragon Ball Daima, may disappoint fans of its earlier 2D style.

Production Background
Super Dragon Ball Heroes is a Japanese original net animation produced as a promotional companion to the card and video game series of the same name. Shueisha's V Jump magazine announced the project in its July 2018 issue, and the first episode received an advance screening on July 1, 2018 at the Super Dragon Ball Heroes Universe Tour 2018 tournament event held at Aeon Lake Town in Saitama Prefecture. Toei Animation handled production without the involvement of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.
The anime draws on the game as its source material and adapts the Prison Planet arc from Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Universe Mission. Individual episodes run about ten minutes each, and the work released 56 installments between July 2018 and August 2024, ending as a finished run. Action and adventure define the work's genre framing.
Late in its release history, this production shifted to a promotional CG movie format because its 2D animation staff were required for Dragon Ball Daima. That change marks the closing stretch of the work's run.
Where This Fits in Dragon Ball
A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Dragon Ball franchise.
-
Step 1
Start with the main Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Super anime, reaching at least the Universe Survival arc, because this promotional ONA branches from that point into alternate scenarios.
-
Step 2
Place this ONA after that mainline viewing point as an optional alternate continuation tied to the Dragon Ball Heroes game line, not as a required chapter of the primary Dragon Ball Super storyline.
-
Step 3
Skip it if you are following only the core saga, since its events unfold in a separate Heroes-focused reality and are not necessary for main-continuity understanding.
-
Step 4
Continue with other mainline Dragon Ball Super material afterward if you want the primary path; this ONA does not need to be completed first.
Franchise Path

- Its events unfold in a separate Heroes-focused reality, so it is not a required chapter of the primary Dragon Ball Super storyline.
After You Finish
Continue with
