Synopsis

Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug is a 1991 animated science fiction martial arts movie. A powerful Namekian invader called Slug arrives with a gang of followers and turns his attention toward Earth. Goku and the other defenders of the planet prepare to resist the incoming threat.

Before the danger fully arrives, Gohan spends time with Piccolo and shows him a tune he has learned to whistle. Piccolo's Namekian hearing makes the sound unusually painful, and their visit is interrupted when both sense an approaching menace from space. Elsewhere, Bulma and her father detect a meteor that carries living passengers and is on a collision course with Earth.

The movie centers on Goku and his allies as they try to stop Slug and his forces. Their efforts focus on protecting the planet, standing up to the invaders, and confronting the overwhelming power that Slug brings to the fight.

Should You Watch It?

Watch it if you enjoy

  • Watch if you enjoy Dragon Ball Z’s 1991 movie-era action and want a short, self-contained clash with a Namekian invader.
  • Watch if you already know Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, and the Z Warriors and want a 52-minute theatrical side story.
  • Watch if you are following the Dragon Ball Z films in release order, after The Tree of Might and before Cooler’s Revenge.

It may not suit you if

  • May not suit viewers new to Dragon Ball Z; the film assumes familiarity with the core cast and continuity.
  • May not suit those seeking a main-continuity arc, since it is an optional theatrical side story that can be skipped.
  • May not suit viewers who prefer longer, arc-driven storytelling, as the conflict unfolds in roughly 52 minutes.

Why It Connects With Audiences

Why people love it

  • A notable draw is its brisk movie-length Dragon Ball Z action, centered on Goku and allies resisting an invading Namekian force.
  • The Gohan-and-Piccolo whistle scene offers a lighter character moment amid the buildup to Slug’s arrival.
  • Its English dub and availability on Crunchyroll and Bilibili TV can make it an easy single-sitting revisit.

Common criticisms

  • A common criticism is that it can feel like a side story rather than essential Dragon Ball Z continuity.
  • Some viewers may find the premise familiar, with an invading villain threatening Earth and the Z Warriors resisting.
  • Its 52-minute runtime can make the threat and conflict feel compressed compared with longer Dragon Ball Z arcs.

Production Background

Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug is a 1991 anime movie with a runtime of 52 minutes. Its Japanese title is Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiyajin da Son Goku. The film was adapted from manga source material and is classified as action, adventure, and science fiction, with themes that include aliens, dragons, martial arts, shounen, and superpowers.

The movie was originally released in Japan on March 9, 1991. It appeared as part of the Toei Anime Fair, where it was screened as a double feature with the first Magical Taruruto-kun film. Within the Dragon Ball Z movie line, it followed Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might and preceded Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, and it is identified as the fourth Dragon Ball Z feature film.

This entry is a finished single movie with an English dub. It is available through streaming services including Bilibili TV and Crunchyroll. The saved record does not provide additional creator or studio details for this exact work.

Franchise Context

Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug is an anime movie entry within the larger Dragon Ball Z franchise, positioned as the fourth Dragon Ball Z feature film. It follows Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might and precedes Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, so within the movie line it is a continuation rather than the starting point of the franchise. Its Japanese title, Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiyan Son Goku, marks it as a 1991 theatrical release connected to the Dragon Ball Z era.

The film is a self-contained animated story rather than a direct episode-by-episode adaptation of a manga chapter or arc. Although its source material is listed as manga, it functions as a feature-length side entry that sits alongside the Dragon Ball Z television continuity. It is not a reboot, remake, or reimagining of an earlier work, and it does not initiate a separate franchise. It is one installment inside the broader Dragon Ball Z film catalogue.

For franchise placement, Lord Slug should be understood as part of the Dragon Ball Z movie sequence, not as a replacement for or summary of the whole franchise. Its 1991 release at the Toei Anime Fair, paired with the first Magical Taruruto-kun film, places it in a specific theatrical exhibition context. Viewers following the franchise can treat it as a mid-run feature that follows earlier Dragon Ball Z movies and comes before later ones such as Cooler's Revenge.

Where This Fits in Dragon Ball

A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Dragon Ball franchise.

  1. Step 1
Begin with the Dragon Ball Z television series so the core cast, including Gohan, Piccolo, and the Z Warriors, is already familiar before any of the films.
  2. Step 2
If you are following the theatrical features in release order, watch Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might before this one, since Lord Slug is the fourth Dragon Ball Z film.
  3. Step 3
Treat this movie as an optional, self-contained side story rather than a required step; it sits apart from the main continuity and can be skipped without disrupting the series.
  4. Step 4
Continue the film line with Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, the feature that followed it.
  5. Step 5
At roughly 52 minutes with an English dub on Crunchyroll and Bilibili TV, it fits comfortably as a single-sitting watch between episodes.

Franchise Path

  1. Start with Dragon Ball Z TV series to meet Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, and the Z Warriors.
  2. In the Dragon Ball Z movie line, watch The Tree of Might before Lord Slug.
  3. Lord Slug is the fourth DBZ feature and a standalone side story, not a required franchise step.
  4. After Lord Slug, the movie sequence continues with Cooler's Revenge.

After You Finish

Continue with

  • Continue with Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, the next DBZ feature after Lord Slug.
  • For main continuity, return to Dragon Ball Z TV episodes after this standalone movie.
  • No direct sequel to Lord Slug exists; the film is self-contained.
