Overview
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 matters as a compact early work that establishes the series' supernatural atmosphere through a focused, tragic lens. Its four chapters form a complete one-volume reading experience, giving the setting and its exorcist school a sense of emotional weight without requiring a long commitment.
The manga balances action, swordplay, special abilities, and urban fantasy with a more intimate look at fear, grief, and isolation. Readers who enjoy school-based supernatural stories, ensemble casts, and emotionally serious shounen manga may find it an approachable entry point, especially if they prefer a concise story with a clear dramatic center.
Synopsis
High school student Yuta Okkotsu is haunted by the curse of his childhood friend, Rika. Overwhelmed by the situation and desperate for an end to his suffering, Yuta draws the attention of Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High.
Gojo brings Yuta into the school, where young jujutsu sorcerers learn to combat curses. As Yuta begins training alongside other students, he must find a way to face the curse tied to him while navigating the dangers of the supernatural world.

Production Background
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was written and illustrated by Gege Akutami and published by Shueisha under the Jump Comics imprint. The four-chapter manga appeared in Jump GIGA during 2017, running from April 28 through July 28, and was completed as a single-volume work.
Shueisha released the collected Japanese edition in print and digitally on December 4, 2018. The book presents the story as a prequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, and the work was subsequently adapted as an anime film.
Franchise Context
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the manga prequel to Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen. It began as a four-chapter, one-volume work in 2017, before the main series was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 2018 onward. The story is set within the same supernatural world and introduces the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, the institution later known as Jujutsu High in the broader series. Shueisha describes it as a work that leads into Jujutsu Kaisen, while reference material identifies the earlier publication as the predecessor that was later retitled Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
This entry is therefore an original manga prequel, not a sequel, remake, or separate spin-off continuity. Its central character is Yuta Okkotsu, a high school student troubled by the curse of his childhood friend Rika, whose situation brings him under Satoru Gojo’s guidance at the school for curse exorcists. The compact prequel provides a focused introduction to Yuta and the school setting before the main manga expands the franchise around a different central cast and conflict. It should be read as a distinct completed manga within the same continuity, rather than as the complete Jujutsu Kaisen franchise.
