Synopsis
Parasyte centers on Shinichi Izumi, an ordinary high school student whose life changes when alien parasites invade Earth, burrowing into human hosts and taking over their brains. One parasite fails to reach Shinichi's brain and instead infects his right hand. Calling itself Migi, it must cooperate with Shinichi to survive. Together they are drawn into a hidden conflict against other parasites that prey on humans, forcing Shinichi to confront violence, grief, and what it means to be human.
Hitoshi Iwaaki's original manga, serialized from 1989, blends body horror, science fiction, and psychological suspense as Shinichi and Migi develop an uneasy partnership. The 2014 anime Parasyte -the maxim- adapts that story with renewed intensity, introducing the duo to a wider audience.
The franchise broadened through later spin-off manga—Neo Parasyte m, Neo Parasyte f, and Parasyte Reversi—which expand the premise in new directions. Across versions, the core remains Shinichi and Migi's struggle to protect humanity without losing their own moral compass.
