Synopsis
Parasyte Reversi is a manga series that began in 2018 and was serialized across 76 chapters collected into eight volumes. It unfolds in the same world as Hitoshi Iwaaki's Parasyte, but it follows a new cast rather than the characters of the original. The story centers on Fukami, a veteran police detective, and a high school student named Tatsuki, whose path crosses the detective's during an investigation.
Fukami is pursuing a disturbing string of dismemberment murders, a case whose violence and scale suggest something far stranger than ordinary criminality. When he meets Tatsuki as a witness to one of the crimes, the boy's composure unsettles him. Tatsuki reacts to the horror around him with a calm that no teenager should be able to manage, and that quiet wrongness lodges in Fukami's mind. Following the feeling leads the detective toward Tatsuki's family, where the roots of his unease appear to lie.
The series blends action, horror, mystery, and psychological drama as Fukami's inquiry pushes him deeper into a hidden layer of the world, one in which predatory shapeshifting organisms live among humans. Moving in the shadows of the legend left behind by Shinichi and Migi, the detective and the guarded student must each reckon with how much they are willing to uncover.
Should You Read It?
Read it if you enjoy
- Read if you want a return to the Parasyte world with a new cast and a police-investigation lens rather than a Shinichi-and-Migi retread.
- Read if you enjoy horror-mystery blends where dismemberment cases, shapeshifting organisms, and psychological unease drive the tension.
- Read if you are interested in a later manga-native franchise expansion set in the shadows of the original's legend.
- Read if you want a finished seinen series, collected in eight volumes, available digitally via K MANGA and Comic Days.
It may not suit you if
- May not suit readers who want Shinichi and Migi as central leads, since Reversi follows new characters and a separate storyline.
- May not suit those sensitive to gore, body horror, tragedy, or dismemberment-murder imagery.
- May not suit readers seeking a fully standalone entry with no assumed awareness of the original Parasyte.
This automatic starting point balances the series length, pacing, time commitment, and available Volluble research data. Editors can override it when firsthand knowledge suggests a better entry point.
Why It Connects With Audiences
Why people love it
- The premise expands Parasyte's parasitic crisis through Detective Fukami's viewpoint and a new high-school witness, Tatsuki.
- It blends action, horror, mystery, and psychological drama while keeping the franchise's shapeshifting-organism threat.
- The completed eight-volume run gives readers a finite, manga-native story rather than an adaptation of existing material.
Common criticisms
- Because it follows a new cast, it may feel supplemental to readers most attached to the original Parasyte duo.
- Franchise context suggests readers should generally start with the original, so Reversi may not work as a first entry.
- Its mystery leans on unsettling family connections and withheld context, which may not satisfy readers wanting immediate answers.

Franchise Context
Parasyte Reversi is a manga work positioned within the broader Parasyte franchise rather than at its starting point. The original Parasyte manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki ran from 1989 to 1994 and introduced Shinichi Izumi and Migi, later inspiring anime and live-action film adaptations. Reversi belongs to the manga line that continues that universe, but it does not retell the original or adapt another version.
Instead, Reversi is a later, original manga story set in the same world. It expands the franchise through new characters and a separate storyline, making it a spin-off or continuation rather than a remake or alternate version. Because its narrative runs alongside and after the established events, it assumes some awareness of the original Parasyte while remaining its own serialized work.
For franchise context, Reversi shows how the property moved beyond Shinichi and Migi's central conflict into other corners of the same parasitic crisis. It sits after the original manga and the major adaptations, offering a manga-native extension rather than a screen adaptation. Readers approaching the franchise chronologically would generally start with the original Parasyte before this entry.
Franchise Path
- Start with Hitoshi Iwaaki's original Parasyte manga (1989–1994), which introduces Shinichi Izumi and Migi and establishes the parasitic crisis.
- Then read Parasyte Reversi as a later same-world spin-off following detective Fukami and student Tatsuki; it assumes some awareness of the original.
After You Finish
Continue with
- Parasyte Reversi is complete at 76 chapters; no direct Reversi sequel is documented in the supplied context.
- After finishing, continue within the franchise by revisiting the original Parasyte manga or its anime/live-action adaptations for the core Shinichi and Migi storyline.
