Synopsis
Suzume centers on Suzume Iwato, a 17-year-old girl living in a quiet Kyushu town. After a chance encounter with Souta Munakata, a young man searching for mysterious doors in abandoned places, Suzume opens a solitary door in a ruin and unwittingly releases a supernatural force that threatens to cause devastating earthquakes across Japan. To set things right, she joins Souta on a journey through the country, closing the doors and confronting the strange entities that emerge from them. Their quest is complicated when Souta is transformed into a talking child's chair and a mischievous cat named Daijin begins guiding—or misleading—them.
As Suzume travels from Kyushu to Tokyo and beyond, she meets people who help her along the way, and she confronts memories of her own past, including the loss that shaped her. The story blends adventure, fantasy, romance, and coming-of-age drama with a nationwide road trip. The franchise began as Makoto Shinkai's 2022 animated film and was accompanied by a manga adaptation, expanding the tale into a different medium while keeping Suzume's emotional journey at its heart.
