Synopsis
Hajime no Ippo: Fighting Spirit! is the original manga that launched the franchise, first serialized in 1989 and still running today. Its protagonist is Makunouchi Ippo, a high school student who has spent years being bullied and ordered around by classmates with no way to fight back. He dreams of becoming someone different but has no idea how to start. That changes when he is rescued from a beating by Takamura Mamoru, a professional boxer who takes the injured boy back to the Kamogawa gym to recover.
Inside the gym, Ippo is struck by the world of boxing and, more importantly, by the feeling he gets when he throws a punch. Takamura tests him, expecting nothing, yet finds unusual power hidden in the boy's fist. Ippo asks to be trained, and the gym's veteran trainer reluctantly takes him on. Much of the early story follows Ippo as he endures brutal conditioning, learns the fundamentals of the sport, and slowly builds confidence, all while asking himself what it actually means to be strong.
Around him stands a broad ensemble of boxers and rivals, among them the flashy Takamura, the skilled Miyata, and hard-nosed opponents such as Mashiba and Sendo. These figures give Ippo both goals and obstacles, pushing him toward the professional ranks even as he stays humble, awkward, and unsure of himself.
Should You Read It?
Read it if you enjoy

- Try it if you enjoy coming-of-age sports stories where a bullied high schooler gradually commits to boxing training and competition.
- Read it if you appreciate a long-running original manga that blends action, comedy, drama, and an ensemble boxing cast.
It may not suit you if
- Skip or delay if you prefer completed series; this main manga is still listed as releasing and has run since 1989.
- It may not suit readers who want a short, finite commitment, given its decades-spanning publication and 100-plus-volume milestone.
- The early premise centers on school bullying and boxing violence, so those themes may not appeal to every reader.
Why It Connects With Audiences
Why people love it
- A key strength is the underdog setup: Ippo's journey from bullied student to aspiring pro boxer gives the training and fights emotional stakes.
- The series is noted for major boxing milestones, such as the rookie king final, Japanese title bout, and Takamura's world challenge.
- Its long serialization lets rivals, gym members, and other boxers develop as an ensemble across multiple eras of the sport.
Common criticisms

- With a large cast and many milestone bouts, portions may feel slow for those wanting a tighter narrative.

Production Background
Hajime no Ippo: Fighting Spirit!, known in Japan as はじめの一歩, is an original manga rather than an adaptation drawn from another work. Serialization began in 1989, and the series is still listed as releasing. The official magazine listing reports cumulative circulation beyond 100 million copies, and its presentation as an anime-adapted title places it among the flagship works of Weekly Shonen Magazine. A dedicated commemorative site was also launched for the milestone of its 100th collected volume.
The publication history has been tracked volume by volume in the magazine's own recap material. The earliest collected books follow bullied high schooler Makunouchi Ippo after his encounter with the boxer Takamura Mamoru and his entry into the Kamogawa gym. Later milestones noted in that history include the rookie king tournament final against Mashiba, the Japanese featherweight title bout against Sendo, and Takamura's world championship challenge, with recap material excerpted through volume 88. That steady, decades-spanning release schedule has kept the manga ongoing across a very large number of collected editions.
For digital readers, the series is available through K MANGA, Pocket Magazine, and Comic Days, giving this long-running manga several online access points. The work is classified under Action, Comedy, Drama, and Sports, with themes including Coming of Age, Ensemble Cast, Male Protagonist, Primarily Adult Cast, and Shounen. Boxing and coming-of-age tags accompany the title, consistent with a manga whose extended run centers on Ippo's search for what it means to be strong.
Franchise Context
This entry is the main manga and originating work within the broader Hajime no Ippo franchise. It began publication in 1989, making it the earliest core installment and the foundation from which the franchise grew. The record identifies it as an original manga rather than an adaptation, spin-off, sequel, or alternate version. Its installment relationship is listed as main_manga, confirming that this individual title sits at the center of the property while other entries may build upon it.
Because the manga is the source material, later anime series and other media function as adaptations or expansions of this original storyline. The official publisher materials note that the property has been adapted into anime and has reached a major cumulative print milestone, while a dedicated site marks the manga reaching 100 volumes. This entry remains ongoing, so its franchise role is both foundational and continuing. It is not a stand-alone work detached from a larger brand, nor is it a side story. Readers looking at the franchise should understand this manga as the primary narrative trunk, with other versions and adaptations branching from it.
Where This Fits in Hajime no Ippo
A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Hajime no Ippo franchise.
-
Step 1
Start with the main manga's first chapter or first collected volume. This record identifies Hajime no Ippo: Fighting Spirit! as the main manga entry, so it is the natural foundation for the parent franchise rather than an optional side story.
-
Step 2
No earlier connected work is listed as required reading for this specific manga. If you are coming from another franchise entry, treat that entry as context or an alternate version, not as a prerequisite.
-
Step 3
Read this series in its original serialized order. The story follows Ippo's boxing development from his early days, so skipping ahead weakens the coming-of-age and rivalry payoffs.
-
Step 4
After catching up with the manga, explore other franchise media only as alternate or supplementary experiences. This page covers the individual manga work, while the franchise hub is the better place to map every related installment.
Franchise Path
- Start here: this main manga is the originating Hajime no Ippo work and the foundation of the franchise.
- Follow the serialized/collected manga order; later franchise entries branch from it rather than precede it.
After You Finish
Continue with
- Continue reading new chapters or volumes; the main manga is still releasing.
- No sequel step is needed because this is the ongoing franchise foundation.
