Synopsis
Shōya Ishida is a high school student haunted by his past: years earlier, he bullied Shōko Nishimiya, a deaf classmate, so cruelly that she transferred away and he was ostracized in turn. Consumed by guilt and unable to hear others' voices—literally seeing their faces marked with X's—he sets out to find Shōko and make amends. Their tentative reunion draws in friends, family members, and former classmates, each carrying their own loneliness, regrets, and misunderstandings. The story unfolds in a quiet contemporary Japanese town, where school life and everyday encounters become the stage for a deeply human conflict about communication, disability, forgiveness, and the difficulty of forgiving oneself. As Shōko and Shōya navigate renewed connection, the narrative explores how kindness and cruelty can coexist, and how redemption is neither simple nor solitary. Originally told as a manga, the tale later reached a wider audience through an animated film, with additional specials expanding its emotional world. The focus remains on the ensemble's fragile steps toward understanding, making the work a poignant drama about the distance between people and the courage it takes to bridge it.
