Synopsis

Overhunter Hunter is a single-chapter manga set in a town unsettled by a series of attacks on its residents. The killings follow a troubling pattern: people, not livestock, are the prey, and the deaths remain unexplained as unease spreads through the community. What the townspeople are dealing with turns out to be a vampire, a violent supernatural predator whose hunger drives the bloodshed.

Against that threat stands a young swordsman, a boy who carries a blade and confronts the creature when it appears. The story keeps its attention on the meeting between the sword-wielding youth and the vampire, framing their clash through martial arts and blade work. The town itself becomes the arena for that confrontation, with the supernatural menace shaping every encounter.

The one-shot presents a self-contained tale built around that central conflict, drawing on demons, vampires, and gore alongside its swordplay. It focuses on a small cast and a single escalating situation rather than an extended, multi-volume storyline.

Production Background

Overhunter Hunter, published under the Japanese title Kagarigari, is a one-shot manga released in 2013. It is an original work rather than an adaptation, and the record lists it as finished with a single chapter and no collected volumes. The Japanese title has also circulated in romanized forms, including Kagari-gari.

The one-shot is noted as an award-winning entry in the 70th Shonen Jump Newcomer Treasure Award, a newcomer competition associated with the publisher's anthology line. In later discussion it has been recognized as a prototype for Kimetsu no Yaiba, the series that grew out of the same creative lineage. Its content leans toward the strong end of the catalog's scale, with demons, vampires, swordplay, martial arts and gore among its listed themes.

No official English-language edition has been verified, and no current streaming or digital outlet is recorded for the title. The available reference material therefore points back to the original Japanese publication as the primary source for this short work.

Franchise Context

Overhunter Hunter is a stand-alone one-shot manga published in 2013, not a continuing series with sequels or spin-offs. Its entry scope is individual, and the catalog lists no separate installments, alternate versions, or adaptations branching from it. Readers should understand this as a single, self-contained chapter rather than a doorway into an ongoing franchise.

Its franchise context instead lies in its relationship to a later, much larger work. The one-shot is documented as a prototype for Kimetsu no Yaiba, sharing the swordplay, demons, and vampire-adjacent horror elements that were later reworked and expanded in that property. That makes this entry a precursor rather than an adaptation, sequel, or spin-off.

The title is also noted in connection with a manga award, having been recognized as an award-winning newcomer entry. For franchise navigation, it is best treated as an early stand-alone experiment whose ideas were later carried forward into a separate, larger series.

Where This Fits in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise.

  1. Step 1
Start here with no preparation needed: Overhunter Hunter is a single-chapter one-shot, so there is no earlier installment or prerequisite reading to finish first.
  2. Step 2
Read it as a self-contained piece. The town thrown into confusion by a vampire case and the sword-wielding boy who appears before the culprit are introduced and resolved within this one chapter.
  3. Step 3
Approach it as an alternate, optional early work rather than a numbered entry in a continuing storyline, since it functions as prototype material that later fed into Kimetsu no Yaiba.
  4. Step 4
Check availability before you commit, as no current official English edition is verified, then turn to the full serialized work it inspired for the expanded treatment, or to other one-shots from the same newcomer award program if you want more of this short-form vein.
