Franchise Context

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train is a feature-film entry in the Demon Slayer franchise, not the series beginning and not a side-story spin-off. It adapts material from Koyoharu Gotouge's manga into a theatrical anime, so it belongs to the mainline Demon Slayer continuity rather than an alternate retelling or independent work.

Within the franchise, this movie functions as a continuation of the anime's central narrative. It was released in 2020 as part of the franchise's anime lineup and carries the same creative team and cast, including animation production by ufotable. Its single-film format sets it apart from the franchise's episodic television seasons while keeping the same characters, setting, and overall story progression.

For viewers following the franchise, the film is best understood as a main-story chapter presented on the big screen. It is not the franchise's starting point, nor does it replace the manga. It can be watched as part of the larger Demon Slayer sequence, while the broader franchise hub covers the surrounding seasons, volumes, and related entries.

Where This Fits in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise.

  1. Step 1
Begin with the opening of the Demon Slayer manga or the earlier anime adaptation so the main cast, the Demon Slayer Corps, and Tanjiro's mission are already established.
  2. Step 2
Treat this movie as a canon continuation of that larger story rather than an optional side adventure or an alternate version; it adapts the Mugen Train arc from the manga.
  3. Step 3
Experience it after the preceding arcs that introduce the characters and before the later arcs that continue from the Mugen Train events.
  4. Step 4
For manga readers, read the Mugen Train chapters within the main run; for anime viewers, watch this film after the earlier animated episodes and then continue with the subsequent animated story.
