Overview

Dragon Ball Super matters because it extends Akira Toriyama's saga with a new continuation rather than a straight retelling. Set in the quiet decade after Majin Buu's defeat, it pushes the story past Earth's familiar horizon and into a wider cosmos of Gods of Destruction, angels, and rival universes, turning questions of strength into something almost cosmic while keeping Goku's appetite for a good fight at the center of the action.

As an experience, it is big, loud, and deliberately escalating. Early episodes lean on comedy and domestic downtime, then build toward organized tournaments and clashes against opponents described in divine terms. Viewers who enjoy martial arts choreography, dramatic transformations, and ensemble battles will find plenty of each, with time travel and alternate timeline threads adding a puzzle-like layer to the spectacle.

For newcomers, this is a relatively forgiving entry point into modern Dragon Ball. Beerus and Whis arrive as fresh characters who require no prior history, and the opening stretch re-introduces core ideas without demanding deep familiarity. Longtime fans will recognize the continuity, while general action and science fiction viewers may find the universe-hopping premise and tournament framework easy to follow.

Synopsis

Dragon Ball Super is a television anime that unfolds during the ten-year stretch of peace between the defeat of Majin Buu and the final chapters of the original Dragon Ball story. Goku has returned to everyday life on Earth, but quiet times leave him restless. Chi-Chi would like him to find steady work, while he would much rather keep training and look for stronger opponents to face.

That wish for a challenge arrives from deep space. The God of Destruction Beerus and his attendant Whis roam the universe sampling food and seeking entertainment, and Beerus has been haunted by a dream about a warrior known as the Super Saiyan God. His hunt for this figure eventually points him toward Earth, drawing Goku, Vegeta, and their companions into encounters with beings whose power dwarfs anything they have known.

From there the story widens beyond the planet, bringing gods, angels, and rivals from other worlds into the orbit of the main cast. Goku and his friends are pushed to grow stronger as they are drawn into competitions and confrontations that test Earth's place in a much larger cosmos, all while balancing training, family, and the friendships that keep them grounded.

Production Background

Dragon Ball Super is a television anime that began in 2015, produced by Toei Animation and broadcast on Fuji TV. Its narrative was built from major plot points written by Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, and it is set within the ten year timeskip that follows the defeat of Majin Boo in Toriyama's original manga.

The production is closely linked to a companion manga series. That manga is illustrated by Toyotarou, with Toriyama credited as writer, and it started serialization in Shueisha's monthly shonen magazine V Jump in June 2015. Toriyama provided the major story beats while Toyotarou handled the artwork and filled in finer details, and Viz Media has licensed the property for release in North America.

The companion manga was placed on hiatus following Toriyama's death in March 2024, a development that shapes the ongoing production context surrounding the wider Dragon Ball Super material.

Franchise Context

Dragon Ball Super belongs to the long-running Dragon Ball franchise as a direct continuation of the original storyline rather than a reboot, remake, or stand-alone work. Its 2015 television debut places it after the events of the original series, picking up during the ten-year gap that follows the defeat of Majin Boo, when Son Goku has grown restless on Earth and his friends are settling into quieter lives. That position makes this television entry a bridge between the earlier Dragon Ball adventures and the newer material that follows, following the familiar cast while introducing divine figures such as Beerus and Whis.

Within the franchise, this television entry runs alongside a companion manga serialized in Shueisha's V Jump, which the saved record marks as the main manga installment of the same title. Both versions follow the same broad arc in which Goku attains godly power and travels to other universes, with Akira Toriyama credited for the major plot points and Toyotarou handling the manga's artwork. The Toei Animation television production is therefore best understood as one branch of a two-pronged release rather than an isolated title or a retelling of an earlier arc.

Its relationship to the wider franchise is one of sequel and expansion rather than spin-off. This page covers a single anime entry inside a much larger history that begins with the original Dragon Ball; the gods, alternate universes, and tournament premises introduced here extend that history rather than replace it.
