Synopsis
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' opens during a stretch of calm on Earth, when two surviving members of Frieza's army, Sorbet and Tagoma, arrive in search of the Dragon Balls. Their purpose is narrow and dangerous: to gather the wish-granting orbs and use them to bring their fallen master back from the dead.
They succeed, and Frieza returns to the living world with his grudge against the Saiyans fully intact. Rather than attack immediately, he commits himself to intense training, determined to reach a level of power that can settle his score with Goku, the warrior who defeated him before. When word of the revival reaches Earth's defenders, Goku, Vegeta, and their allies prepare for another encounter with an enemy they had believed was gone for good.
The film centers on that confrontation, a battle driven by revenge on one side and the protection of Earth on the other. It places Goku and Vegeta at the front of the struggle while Frieza, newly returned and stronger than ever, seeks the rematch he has waited for.

Franchise Context
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' is a 2015 anime film that serves as a direct sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. It is the nineteenth animated feature in the Dragon Ball franchise and the fifteenth entry to carry the Dragon Ball Z film branding. Within the broader series timeline, it continues the revived narrative thread introduced in Battle of Gods, rather than retelling earlier events or acting as a standalone side story.
The film is an original work, not an adaptation of a manga arc. It was supervised by franchise creator Akira Toriyama, marking the second Dragon Ball film to receive his direct involvement. Its story follows the resurrection of the villain Frieza and his quest for revenge against Goku, placing it after the events of Battle of Gods and before later installments in the franchise's modern film and series continuity.
As an individual movie, Resurrection 'F' fits within the Dragon Ball Z film line but does not encompass the entire franchise. It is a continuation of the main storyline, distinct from spin-offs, alternate retellings, or the original manga and television anime series.
