Overview
Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! occupies a modest but meaningful place in the long history of its franchise. Released in 2008 as a single 35 minute special, it marked the return of Dragon Ball to animation after a twelve year gap, and it was built from an original concept by Akira Toriyama himself. Rather than chasing the apocalyptic stakes of the series at its most intense, this short treats the reunion itself as the event, bringing the extended cast together for a banquet and letting the warmth of that gathering carry much of the running time. For a franchise so often defined by escalation, its willingness to slow down is precisely what gives it value.
The experience here is light, comedic, and companionable. The special sits a couple of years after the defeat of Majin Buu, which means the characters are largely at peace and free to bicker, eat, and catch up before a brief confrontation arrives to remind everyone what they are capable of. That confrontation introduces new faces, including Vegeta's younger brother, expanding the Saiyan family tree in a way that feels personal rather than cosmic. The result plays like a relaxed epilogue with a spark of action at the end, short enough to enjoy in one sitting and gentle enough to leave viewers in good spirits.
Because it assumes familiarity with the Buu era and its heroes, this special is best approached by viewers who already know the main cast and want to spend a little more time with them in an off duty mood. Newcomers can still follow the humor and the simple setup, though the emotional payoff depends on recognizing who these people are to one another. Those seeking a grand turning point may find it slight, but anyone who values the quieter, more domestic side of Dragon Ball will find this an easy and rewarding small chapter.
Synopsis
Set two years after the defeat of Majin Buu, this 35-minute special brings Son Goku, Vegeta, and their families together for a banquet at a new hotel built by Mr. Satan. The celebration is meant to honor what most of Earth believes was his victory over Buu, and it gives the extended cast a rare stretch of peacetime in which to gather.
The meal is interrupted when two Saiyan spacecraft land and a visitor approaches the group. He is Tarble, Vegeta's younger brother, who was sent away from Planet Vegeta as a child because he was judged too weak to fight. Arriving alongside his wife, he explains that the couple has been pursued across space and has come to Earth seeking help.
Their pursuers are Abo and Kado, a red and blue pair of fighters whose style echoes the remnants of Frieza's army. With the banquet thrown into disarray and the newcomers in danger, Goku, Vegeta, and their friends step forward to meet the threat, turning a family reunion into an unexpected confrontation.

Production Background
Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! is a single-episode anime special with a runtime of about 35 minutes. It was produced in Japan and released in 2008, drawing on the Dragon Ball manga as its source material. The special was developed from an original concept by Akira Toriyama, the author of the Dragon Ball series, which gives this short a direct creative tie to the manga rather than adapting an existing storyline from the printed page.
The short premiered as part of the Jump Super Anime Tour, screening at tour events between September 21 and November 23, 2008. Its release marked the first animated Dragon Ball film in twelve years, arriving after the tenth anniversary film The Path to Power, and it functions as a standalone anniversary-era short rather than one of the older feature-length entries.
Built around new material, the special is set shortly after the defeat of Majin Buu and introduces four new characters. Among them are the aliens Abo and Kado and a young Saiyan child named Tāburu, presented here as Vegeta's younger brother. That focus on fresh characters and a post-Buu timeline gives the production its own place within the franchise's animation history.
Franchise Context
Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! is a special anime short set within the larger Dragon Ball franchise. It takes place after the defeat of Majin Buu, continuing the storyline of Dragon Ball Z rather than restarting or reimagining it. The special follows Goku, Vegeta, and their allies as they gather for a banquet hosted by Mr. Satan, only for new arrivals to interrupt the celebration.
This entry is a continuation and a standalone side story, not a remake or alternate version of an earlier arc. It was created for the Jump Super Anime Tour in 2008 and was the first animated Dragon Ball film in twelve years, following the tenth anniversary film The Path to Power. Though it shares continuity with the main series, its short runtime and self-contained conflict make it a distinct special rather than a full series installment.
The special introduced new characters to the franchise, including Vegeta's younger brother Tarble and the alien duo Abo and Kado. These additions connect the special to the broader Saiyan lore, particularly the fate of Planet Vegeta, while keeping the focus on a reunion of familiar heroes. As an individual work, it sits alongside other Dragon Ball films and specials, offering a brief post-Majin Buu adventure rather than representing the franchise as a whole.

Begin with the main Dragon Ball story up through the Majin Buu arc. This special takes place two years after Kid Buu's defeat, so it belongs after that conflict.
