Overview

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: Twilight AXIS is a compact entry in the Universal Century that turns a familiar military science-fiction setting toward uncertainty, memory, and divided loyalties. Its distinction is also central to its identity: Arlette Almage leads the anime, giving a Gundam production a female protagonist whose technical background shapes how she approaches danger. The six-episode ONA format keeps the work focused and immediate, while the investigation of the ruined Axis creates an atmosphere of unease rather than a broad battlefield spectacle.

This is best approached as a brief, mood-driven experience built around damaged machines, abandoned military history, and characters whose past affiliations still matter. The very short episodes make it accessible to viewers curious about Gundam but unwilling to commit to a long series, especially those drawn to real-robot design and science-fiction mysteries. At the same time, its placement in the late Universal Century gives established viewers extra context to consider, including the significance of Axis and the shadow cast by earlier conflicts. Twilight AXIS may feel more like a concentrated side story than a fully expansive campaign, but that narrow scale is part of its appeal: it offers a quick, visually pointed glimpse into a tense corner of the setting, with a perspective that stands apart from the usual Gundam center of gravity.

Synopsis

Set in the late Universal Century 0096, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: Twilight AXIS follows a special investigation conducted on the shattered asteroid Axis as it drifts through the Earth Sphere. The Earth Federation assigns the Mastema special forces team to examine the damaged remains of the former base. Mehmet leads the mission, accompanied by Arlette Almage and Danton Highleg, two civilians with backgrounds on opposing sides of the previous conflicts. Arlette was once a mobile suit engineer, while Danton served as a test pilot, giving both characters practical knowledge of the machines and military history surrounding the site.

The investigation quickly becomes a dangerous operation when the team is attacked by a private militia. With the ruins of Axis offering both valuable technology and reminders of its violent past, the expedition turns into a struggle for control of a strategically important wreckage zone. Arlette is particularly difficult to read as the situation worsens. She is pursuing a concealed objective of her own, separate from the official mission, and her interest leads her toward the abandoned Sazabi lying on the asteroid's surface. The series combines close-quarters military action, mobile suit combat, and the tension of exploring a place where old loyalties and unresolved ambitions remain active.

Production Background

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: Twilight AXIS originated as a light novel series written by Kōjirō Nakamura and illustrated by ARK Performance. The novels were released by Sunrise under the Yatate Bunko imprint, providing the source material for this anime adaptation. Sunrise also produced the animated version, positioning the project as an original net animation rather than a television broadcast series. Its production is notable within Gundam for featuring a main female protagonist, Arlette Almage, while retaining the franchise’s military and real-robot focus.

The anime was released online as a six-episode ONA from June 23 through September 1, 2017. Each episode is listed with a three-minute runtime, making this a compact adaptation of the light novel property rather than a conventional full-length series. A theatrical compilation of the ONA followed on November 18, 2017. The story is set around an investigation of the remains of the asteroid Axis and centers on former Zeon-affiliated personnel, with the light novel source also described as being loosely based on Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde. These elements give the production a concise online format and a literary influence distinct from its mechanical and military setting.

Franchise Context

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: Twilight AXIS is a six-episode original net animation set within the Universal Century branch of the Gundam franchise. It is not the beginning of Gundam, a remake, or a stand-alone setting. The story takes place after Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and before Mobile Suit Gundam F91, making this entry a later continuity installment rather than a direct continuation of a single preceding television series.

The anime adapts the light novel series written by Kōjirō Nakamura and illustrated by ARK Performance, published under Sunrise’s Yatate Bunko imprint. Its 2017 release presents that material in a compact ONA format, with each episode running approximately three minutes. A theatrical compilation was released later in 2017, but that movie is a separate presentation of the material and is not the format represented by this page. Within the franchise, Twilight AXIS is also notable for featuring Gundam’s first main female protagonist.

Where This Fits in Gundam

A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Gundam franchise.

  1. Step 1
For the clearest Universal Century setup, watch Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn first, since Twilight AXIS takes place after its events.
  2. Step 2
Watch this six-episode ONA next as an optional side story about an investigation of the remains of Axis.
  3. Step 3
The 2017 theatrical compilation is an alternate presentation of this story, not a separate required sequel.
  4. Step 4
Continue with Mobile Suit Gundam F91 for a later Universal Century setting, after Twilight AXIS.

Franchise Path

  1. Watch Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn first for the late U.C. 0096 setup.
  2. Watch this six-episode ONA as an optional Universal Century side story.
  3. Treat the 2017 theatrical compilation as an alternate presentation, not a separate entry.
