Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! – Mashiba vs Kimura

はじめの一歩 間柴vs木村 死刑執行

Synopsis

This single-episode original video animation centers on Tatsuya Kimura, a junior lightweight boxer at the Kamogawa gym who has spent years as a dependable supporting fighter while flashier talents around him claim the headlines. His patience is finally rewarded when he is offered a shot at a championship bout on the annual champion carnival card, an opportunity that could define his entire career and validate everything he has built in the ring.

Standing across from him is Ryo Mashiba, the reigning junior lightweight champion. Tall, long-armed and famously cold-blooded, Mashiba wields a snapping flicker jab and an intimidating presence that have made him one of the most feared fighters in the division. Kimura, smaller and far less celebrated, must solve the difficult puzzle of closing the distance against a man whose reach and reputation seem to guarantee his continued reign.

The match becomes a study in determination against overwhelming odds, as Kimura draws on the discipline and grit built through years of training alongside his gymmates. The bout tests whether steady, unglamorous effort can stand up to raw talent and menace, while the champion's own pride and motivations add tension to every exchange. The story stays close to the ring and to the working routines of a boxer chasing one defining night.

Should You Watch It?

Watch it if you enjoy

  • Watch if you already follow Hajime no Ippo and want a focused spotlight on Kamogawa gym's supporting boxer Tatsuya Kimura.
  • Watch if you enjoy underdog boxing dramas about steady effort, ring tactics, and closing distance against a longer, more feared champion.
  • Watch if you want a self-contained 61-minute OVA that adapts a manga side storyline and can be placed after the original 2000-2002 anime.

It may not suit you if

  • May not suit newcomers, since the OVA assumes familiarity with Ippo Makunouchi's world, the gymmates, and the junior lightweight title picture.
  • May not suit viewers seeking a required main-story step; this is framed as an optional side story rather than an entry that advances Ippo's core narrative.
  • May not suit viewers who prefer longer series or who are not drawn to boxing/sports drama, as it is a single 61-minute bout-focused OVA.

Why It Connects With Audiences

Why people love it

  • A likely draw is the rare focus on Kimura, a dependable supporting fighter finally getting a championship opportunity after years in the background.
  • The matchup offers a clear tactical puzzle: Kimura must solve Mashiba's reach, flicker jab, and intimidating presence to close the distance.
  • The compact 61-minute runtime keeps the drama centered on determination against overwhelming odds, which may appeal to franchise devotees.

Common criticisms

  • A likely limitation is that it functions as an optional side story, so it may feel non-essential to viewers tracking the main Ippo narrative.
  • Newcomers may find the cast and championship context assumed rather than explained, since it is tied to a long-running manga and anime franchise.
  • Its single-episode OVA format limits how much of the surrounding franchise cast and season can be explored beyond the central bout.

Where This Fits in Hajime no Ippo

A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Hajime no Ippo franchise.

  1. Step 1
Begin with the foundation of the franchise, either George Morikawa's long-running manga or the 76-episode anime that aired from 2000 to 2002, since this OVA assumes familiarity with Ippo Makunouchi's world and its supporting cast.
  2. Step 2
Place this single 61-minute OVA after that original anime run, in the same 2003 window as the television film, because it adapts a manga storyline centered on Kimura's Junior Lightweight title challenge against Mashiba.
  3. Step 3
Treat it as an optional side story rather than a required step, since it is a self-contained bout rather than an entry that advances the main Ippo narrative, so viewers can skip it without losing the core thread.
  4. Step 4
Continue afterward with Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger from 2009 and then Hajime no Ippo: Rising from 2013 to 2014 for the later animated chapters of the franchise.

Franchise Path

  1. Start with the 2000–2002 Hajime no Ippo TV anime or George Morikawa's manga to meet Kimura, Mashiba, and the Kamogawa gym.
  2. Watch this 2003 OVA after that original TV run; it adapts a self-contained Junior Lightweight title bout.
  3. It sits alongside the 2003 TV film as an optional side story and is not required for Ippo's main narrative.
  4. Continue the franchise path with Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger (2009) and Hajime no Ippo: Rising (2013–2014).

After You Finish

Continue with

  • After finishing this OVA, continue with Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger (2009) for the next animated chapters.
  • Then proceed to Hajime no Ippo: Rising (2013–2014) to follow the later animated portion of the franchise.
