Overview
JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 stands out as a concentrated entry into its supernatural world, pairing urban fantasy combat with a more intimate emotional core. Its focus on grief, attachment, and the cost of power gives the action lasting weight rather than treating curses and battles as spectacle alone.
The 105-minute animated experience is approachable for newcomers who want a defined starting point, while its tragic tone, sharp swordplay, and strong character bonds will appeal to established action fans. Viewers should expect intense violence and emotionally heavy material alongside its school setting and dark humor.
Synopsis
Yuta Okkotsu is a troubled high school student haunted by the cursed spirit of his childhood friend, Rika Orimoto. After Rika’s presence draws the attention of Satoru Gojo, Yuta enrolls at Tokyo Jujutsu High, where young sorcerers train to confront curses and protect people from supernatural threats.
At the school, Yuta begins learning to control his connection to Rika while working alongside fellow students and experienced sorcerers. As he faces increasingly dangerous curses and enemies, he must confront the grief, fear, and power surrounding the bond that has shaped his life.

- Choose it if you enjoy school-based urban fantasy, swordplay, curses, and emotionally driven battles.
It may not suit you if
- It may not suit readers who prefer lighter stories, as tragedy, death, gore, and intense supernatural violence are central.
- The strong focus on Yuta’s attachment and grief may feel emotionally heavy for readers seeking action without darker themes.
The primary starting work is a movie, so the full film is the natural Volluble Test Drive. This gives you the complete story instead of applying an episodic trial to a feature-length work.

Production Background
JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 was created by Gege Akutami and published by Shueisha under its Jump Comics imprint. The manga served as the source material for the animated film adaptation released in 2021.
Produced by MAPPA, the film was directed by Sunghoo Park and written by Hiroshi Seko. The project was initially considered as an arc of the television anime before being developed as a feature film, which premiered on December 24, 2021, with a runtime of 105 minutes.
Franchise Context
JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 is the prologue to Gege Akutami’s JUJUTSU KAISEN manga, establishing an earlier point in the franchise through Yuta Okkotsu’s introduction. It is therefore a beginning and a companion entry rather than a continuation of the main series. Its setting and characters connect directly to the larger world of jujutsu sorcerers, while its focus remains on Yuta and the curse associated with his childhood friend, Rika Orimoto.
The franchise also includes a separate animated movie adaptation titled JUJUTSU KAISEN 0. That film is based on the manga identified here and is not a remake, sequel, or alternate version of the manga entry. The movie was produced by MAPPA and released as a 105-minute feature in 2021. Readers can treat this work as the franchise’s narrative starting point, while viewers may choose the animated adaptation as its corresponding film version before moving to the main JUJUTSU KAISEN anime or manga.
