Synopsis
In a world where most people are born with superhuman abilities known as Quirks, Izuku Midoriya, called Deku, studies at U.A. High School with the aim of becoming a hero who can save anyone with a smile. This film tells an original story set amid the upheaval that follows a nationwide clash between heroes and villains, placing Deku and his classmates on a new and separate battlefield.
A mysterious giant fortress appears over a scarred landscape, and with it comes a man who calls to mind the former Symbol of Peace. He is Dark Might, an imitator of All Might, the hero Deku has admired since childhood, and he claims that title for himself. Deku, together with U.A. High Class 1-A members such as Katsuki Bakugo, Shoto Todoroki, Ochaco Uraraka, and Tenya Iida, moves to confront this self-proclaimed symbol.
The struggle turns on what a true symbol of peace ought to be and on whether Deku and his friends can protect the world from a man wearing the image of his idol. Supervised by original creator Kohei Horikoshi, who also provided character designs, the film presents a standalone theatrical adventure for the young heroes.

Production Background
My Hero Academia: You're Next is a 2024 anime film produced by Bones and distributed by Toho. It is the fourth theatrical entry in the franchise and was announced in August 2023. Tensai Okamura directed the film, taking over from Kenji Nagasaki, while Yosuke Kuroda wrote the script. Much of the production staff returned from earlier films. The Japanese voice cast includes Daiki Yamashita, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Yuki Kaji, Ayane Sakura, and Kaito Ishikawa.
The film presents an original story rather than a direct adaptation of a specific manga arc. It is set after the U.A. Traitor arc and during the seventh season of the television anime. Original manga creator Kohei Horikoshi served as general supervisor and provided character concepts for the project. The narrative follows Izuku Midoriya as he confronts Dark Might, a villain who imitates All Might.
You're Next opened in Japan on August 2, 2024, with a runtime of 110 minutes. An English dub was produced, and the film became available through streaming services including Hulu and Crunchyroll. The movie is a side story within the wider My Hero Academia series.
Franchise Context
My Hero Academia: You're Next is the fourth theatrical film in the My Hero Academia franchise, arriving after Two Heroes, Heroes Rising, and World Heroes' Mission. It is a side story rather than a direct adaptation of a manga arc: the film presents an original narrative set during the television anime's seventh season and after the U.A. Traitor arc, standing alongside the ongoing series instead of condensing or replacing it. Viewers who only know the movies can follow it, but its placement rewards familiarity with Deku and Class 1-A.
Behind the camera, the production maintains strong franchise continuity while marking a change. Original manga creator Kohei Horikoshi returned as general supervisor and provided character designs, and screenwriter Yosuke Kuroda came back from earlier installments. Tensai Okamura took over directing duties from Kenji Nagasaki, who had helmed the first three movies, while Bones animated and Toho distributed. The result continues in spirit the previous theatrical entries, a self-contained feature embedded in the larger My Hero Academia story rather than a reboot or a fresh starting point.
Where This Fits in My Hero Academia
A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader My Hero Academia franchise.
-
Step 1
Begin with the My Hero Academia main story, either the manga from its first chapter or the TV anime from season 1, since this film assumes you already know Deku, Class 1-A, and All Might's legacy.
-
Step 2
Reach the U.A. Traitor arc of season 7 before pressing play, because the film is positioned immediately after that arc and just before the Final War arc.
-
Step 3
Treat the film as an optional original side story: its events do not alter the manga's mainline, so skipping it costs nothing essential to the overall plot.
-
Step 4
No earlier film is required first. Two Heroes, Heroes Rising, and World Heroes' Mission are standalone side stories that can be watched before or after this one without breaking continuity.
-
Step 5
After finishing, return to the main story and continue with the rest of season 7 and the Final War arc through to the manga's conclusion.
