Synopsis
Set in the years following the Fourth Great Ninja War, the story unfolds in an era of peace in which the hidden villages have grown more modern and the legendary figures of the previous generation have settled into new roles. At the center is Boruto Uzumaki, the son of Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyuga. With his father occupied by the duties of the Hokage, Boruto carries a lingering frustration at the distance between them and is determined to chart a path that is not defined by his lineage.
Boruto trains alongside his classmates at the Academy in Konohagakure, where his team includes Sarada Uchiha, the daughter of Sasuke and Sakura, and the enigmatic Mitsuki. The three are guided by Konohamaru Sarutobi as they take on missions and prepare for the trials that will measure them as shinobi. Their world is shaken by signs of a threat with ties to the past, prompting Sasuke to investigate in secret and return with warnings for Naruto.
As Boruto works to prove himself and to understand the legacy he has inherited, he seeks out Sasuke as a mentor, hoping to learn from the man who was once his father's closest comrade. The central conflict turns on how a new generation confronts dangers that echo earlier wars while forging its own identity, and on whether Boruto can find his own answer to what it means to be a ninja.

Franchise Context
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is a next-generation continuation within the Naruto franchise, positioned after the original Naruto series and Naruto Shippuden. Rather than retelling earlier events or standing alone, it extends the established world into a later era and shifts the central focus from Naruto Uzumaki to his son, Boruto. The franchise hub groups it alongside the earlier Naruto entries and the later Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, marking this as a distinct chapter in an ongoing lineage.
The work exists across formats. This entry is the television anime, while the manga of the same name serves as the main manga within the same branch. The manga is drawn by Mikio Ikemoto, with Masashi Kishimoto credited as author, and the official Naruto portal lists the Boruto comics alongside the original series. The manga remains the principal work that this anime entry draws from.
Because it is an individual entry rather than the franchise as a whole, it should be read as one installment in a larger sequence: a continuation that opens a new generation, later carried forward by Two Blue Vortex.
Where This Fits in NARUTO
A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader NARUTO franchise.
-
Step 1
Start with the original Naruto, in manga or anime form, to learn the ninja world, the villages and the characters whose children take the lead later.
-
Step 2
Continue with Naruto Shippuden, the second half of that story, because its peace and its surviving threats are the foundation this next generation story builds on.
-
Step 3
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations comes after that timeline and follows Naruto's son and his team, so it works as a continuation rather than an entry point for newcomers.
-
Step 4
Within this series, follow the Boruto manga volumes in order, since the chapters form one continuous storyline; the listed anime adaptation covers the same material alongside it.
-
Step 5
After this story, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex carries the narrative forward with a later status quo for the same cast.
