Synopsis
One Piece Film: Z is a 2012 feature film set within the world of One Piece, following Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates as they cross paths with a former Marine Admiral known as Z. Now a renegade, Z leads a band of vigilantes who have stolen the Dyna Stones, artifacts the Marines regard as their ultimate trump card and that some compare to the Ancient Weapons. With those stones in his possession, Z turns his hostility toward the pirates sailing the New World.
The film centers on the Straw Hat crew, among them Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky, and Brook, who find themselves among Z's intended targets. Two close subordinates, Ain and Benz, carry out his campaign at his side. The bitter history these antagonists share with the Marines shapes their motives and gives their mission its driving force.
The primary conflict is a direct clash between Luffy's crew and Z's forces while the Marines also move to recover what was taken. The Straw Hats must weigh how far they are willing to go against an opponent whose strength and conviction make him exceptionally dangerous, with the fate of the New World resting on the outcome.

Production Background
One Piece Film: Z is a 2012 Japanese anime fantasy action adventure film and the twelfth feature film in the One Piece film series. It was directed by Tatsuya Nagamine and runs 107 minutes, opening in Japan on December 15, 2012. The film presents an original story rather than adapting a specific arc panel for panel, while drawing on the characters and setting established in Eiichiro Oda's manga.
The production brought together the regular television cast, including Mayumi Tanaka, Kazuya Nakai, Akemi Okamura, Kappei Yamaguchi, Hiroaki Hirata, Ikue Otani, Yuriko Yamaguchi, Kazuki Yao, and Chō. Hōchū Ōtsuka voiced Zephyr, a former naval Admiral, with Ryoko Shinohara and Teruyuki Kagawa playing Zephyr's henchmen Ain and Benz. The film's events are placed near the end of the fifteenth season of the One Piece anime, within the "Z's Ambition" story arc, which serves as a prologue to the movie.
An English dub was produced, and the film has been distributed through streaming services including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Crunchyroll. As the twelfth theatrical entry, it stands as a self-contained story within the broader One Piece film lineup.
Franchise Context
One Piece Film: Z is the twelfth theatrical feature in the One Piece film series, a companion line of movies that runs alongside Eiichiro Oda's manga and the long-running television anime. Unlike earlier entries that retold or compressed existing manga arcs, this film was written as an original story for the screen, with no direct manga counterpart. It follows the regular cast of Straw Hat Pirates rather than introducing a separate continuity.
In franchise chronology, the movie sits near the end of the fifteenth season of the television anime, tied to the "Z's Ambition" arc that serves as its prologue. It is neither a remake nor an alternate retelling of prior material, and it does not reset the ongoing story. Instead it functions as a stand-alone theatrical episode that slots into the anime's timeline, with the regular television voice cast reprising their roles.
For newcomers, the film can be watched on its own, though its placement late in the series means it assumes familiarity with the crew and the New World setting.
Where This Fits in One Piece
A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader One Piece franchise.
-
Step 1
Begin with the main One Piece anime or manga so the Straw Hat crew, the New World setting, and the series baseline stakes are familiar.
-
Step 2
For anime continuity, watch the "Z's Ambition" arc prologue before this film; it leads into the movie's setup without revealing major later events.
-
Step 3
One Piece Film: Z is the twelfth One Piece feature film and works as a self-contained side story, so it is optional for following the main series.
-
Step 4
After finishing it, return to the main One Piece series where you left off, or continue with other One Piece films as separate side adventures.
