Overview

MONSTERS: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation is a single-episode ONA that adapts Eiichiro Oda's early short manga, and it behaves like a self-contained work rather than a serial commitment. In roughly twenty-five minutes it lays out a compact samurai tale: a wandering swordsman, a town scarred by a dragon, and a young survivor whose plight draws him into a fight he never asked for. The running time shapes the experience, with little room for detours, so the story moves from introduction to confrontation with unusual speed and clarity.

What gives this individual work its character is the collision of tones. Swordplay and dragon spectacle sit alongside comic banter and a real streak of tragedy, and the turn from a light exchange to a grim revelation arrives quickly enough to sting. The craft behind it is more ambitious than the short format usually invites, from the direction credited to Sunghoo Park to the character design and score, all aimed at a weight and texture that a one-off episode rarely receives. It is a story that closes in one sitting, which makes it easy to revisit or to sample without a long-term investment.

Approachability is part of the appeal. Newcomers can follow this work on its own terms, since nothing here requires prior knowledge of a larger saga, while readers and viewers already familiar with the swordsman Ryuma will recognize him and see his legend given fuller shape. It suits anyone who wants a brisk, moody action piece with a melancholy edge, and it is widely available subtitled and dubbed across major streaming services, so the barrier to trying it is low. Treat it as a short, sharp standalone viewing rather than an entry point into a sprawling franchise.

Synopsis

In a largely peaceful era, the sudden appearance of a dragon brings terror to the skies. Ryuma, a young wandering samurai, travels in search of the soul of a warrior. His journey leads him to a small town where he meets Flare, a waitress and the sole survivor of a dragon attack that destroyed her hometown seven years earlier.

Ryuma prefers to avoid trouble, but trouble finds him. A stolen dragon horn is at the center of a brewing conflict, and a skilled swordsman named Cyrano is also on a quest to recover it. As Ryuma becomes entangled with Flare and Cyrano, he must confront the looming dragon threat that haunts the land.

Based on Eiichiro Oda's one-shot manga, this anime adaptation blends action, comedy, and drama as it follows Ryuma's swordsmanship and the mysteries surrounding the dragon's wrath.

The primary starting work is a single ONA, so watching it in full is the natural Volluble Test Drive.

Why It Connects With Audiences

Why people love it

  • The direction credited to Sunghoo Park and the production values aim for weight and texture rare in a one-off episode.
  • The tonal collision of swordplay, dragon spectacle, comic banter, and real tragedy gives the short story a memorable sting.
  • Ryuma's reluctant-hero dynamic with Flare and Cyrano drives a compact, clear conflict.
  • It adapts Eiichiro Oda's 1994 one-shot, appealing to fans curious about his pre-One Piece work.

Common criticisms

  • Some may find the 25-minute runtime too compressed for the mystery and cast to breathe.
  • The quick shift from light exchange to grim revelation could feel abrupt to some viewers.
  • As optional side material tied to a One Piece character, it may feel slight without broader franchise context.
  • Being a single-episode adaptation, it may not satisfy those wanting expanded worldbuilding or follow-up.

Production Background

MONSTERS: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation adapts Eiichiro Oda's one-shot manga MONSTERS, which Shueisha published in the Autumn Special issue of Weekly Shonen Jump in October 1994. Oda drew the story before beginning One Piece, and it was later collected in the Jump Comics short story volume WANTED!, released on November 4, 1998. The 2024 production is the short work's first anime adaptation.

The ONA was produced by E&H Production, with Sunghoo Park serving as director and handling composition. Park previously directed the first season of the Jujutsu Kaisen television anime and the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Takashi Kojima handled character design, Fumihisa Akai was art director, Ryoji Nagasawa handled color design, Jumi Lee served as director of photography, and Keisuke Yanagi edited. Hiroyuki Tsutsumi composed the music, Kenju Kobayashi was music producer, and Akiko Fujita served as sound director.

The single 25-minute episode premiered in January 2024 with a simultaneous worldwide streaming rollout. In Japan, Netflix and Prime Video carried the earliest streaming release, and the work also became available through additional services and YouTube. Alongside the Japanese audio, an English dub was produced, with Yoshimasa Hosoya voicing Ryuma in Japanese and Robbie Daymond voicing the character in English.
