Overview
One Piece: Heart of Gold is a feature-length anime special from 2016 that stands on its own as a single, self-contained adventure rather than an installment of the weekly television run. At roughly one hundred and four minutes, it carries the scale and momentum of a theatrical film while remaining one special, which makes it an appealing option for viewers who want a complete story without committing to a long arc.
Its draw is the mix of treasure-hunting mystery, comedy, and ensemble chemistry that defines the series, sharpened here into a tighter, more focused narrative. The special also functions as a lead-in to the theatrical feature One Piece Film: Gold, introducing story material and characters that the film builds upon, so it rewards those who plan to watch the two in sequence and gives it more purpose than a typical side story.
The central premise of a hunt for a legendary treasure and the clear introduction of its new characters make this special relatively approachable for casual viewers or newcomers, while longtime fans will still get the most from the returning cast. An English dub and streaming availability on Crunchyroll and Tubi TV make it easy to sample for anyone curious about this corner of the saga.
Synopsis
One Piece: Heart of Gold is a single 2016 anime special in which Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates cross paths with Olga, a young girl who has fled the island of Alchemi. Alchemi was once renowned for its metalworking and, above all, for the creation of Pure Gold, an extraordinarily valuable substance, but the island vanished two hundred years ago and its secrets went with it.
Olga is not traveling alone for long. Marines take an interest in her because of what she may know about Pure Gold, and the wealthy Gildo Tesoro, a man with influence over Navy headquarters and the black market, learns of her as well and hires the treasure hunter Mad Treasure to hunt her down. The Straw Hats throw in with Olga to search for the lost treasure, placing the crew between pursuing Marines, hired hunters, and everyone else who wants the gold for themselves.
What complicates the partnership is Olga herself. She has her own plans for the fortune and intends to use her new companions to secure it, hoping to become rich in the process. The special balances that uneasy alliance against the crew's appetite for adventure, following Luffy and his friends as they chase a legendary prize whose value draws danger from every direction.

Why It Connects With Audiences
Why people love it
- The mystery of the vanished island of Alchemi and the legendary Pure Gold gives the special a focused, self-contained hook.
- The familiar ensemble cast carries the adventure with comedy and teamwork, supported by an English dub and streaming on Crunchyroll and Tubi TV.
- Its positioning as a lead-in to One Piece Film: Gold gives it more purpose than a typical disconnected side story.
Common criticisms
- Some viewers may treat it as optional viewing, since it stands outside the main storyline and does not replace it.
- Its value is closely tied to Film: Gold, so watched alone the setup may feel like preamble rather than payoff.
- A single special gives limited room to its new characters, so their motivations can feel sketched rather than fully developed.

Production Background
One Piece: Heart of Gold is a single-episode anime special released in 2016, with a runtime of roughly 104 minutes. Its source material is the One Piece manga, and it aired during the summer 2016 season. The special keeps the franchise's ensemble pirate cast at its center while introducing Olga, a girl who has escaped the vanished island of Alchemi, and the legend of the extremely valuable Pure Gold that she is pursued for.
The special was positioned alongside One Piece Film: Gold, the thirteenth entry in the franchise's film series. Film: Gold picks up directly after the events of Heart of Gold, following the Straw Hats to the entertainment ship and independent nation of Gran Tesoro, and it opened in Japanese theaters on July 23, 2016 under director Hiroaki Miyamoto and producer Toei Animation. Heart of Gold arrived on July 16, 2016, placing it just ahead of that theatrical opening and setting up the villain Gild Tesoro, who controls the Navy headquarters and the black market, as well as the treasure hunter Mad Treasure.
For English-speaking audiences, the special has a dub available and can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Tubi TV.
Franchise Context
One Piece: Heart of Gold is a single-episode anime special that sits alongside the One Piece franchise rather than inside its long-running television storyline. Eiichiro Oda's manga is the source of the franchise, but this 2016 special tells a self-contained side adventure, so it can be approached without working through the main series episode by episode.
Its closest franchise relative is One Piece Film: Gold, the thirteenth feature film in the series, which reached Japanese theaters shortly after the special debuted in July 2016. Heart of Gold serves as a lead-in to that film, introducing the Pure Gold premise and the treasure hunters circling Gild Tesoro's world, while the movie's story picks up after the special's events. The two are companions rather than chapters of one continuous arc.
Within the broader catalog, Heart of Gold is a stand-alone special belonging to a very large multimedia franchise that also includes the original manga, the weekly anime, and numerous other films and specials. It contributes one piece of the franchise's theatrical-era storytelling without retelling or replacing the main narrative.
