Overview
OVERLORD: The Sacred Kingdom matters because it moves the franchise's political imagination somewhere new. Rather than staying inside the Sorcerer Kingdom's throne room, this theatrical feature follows a walled human nation whose long peace is shattered by the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth and his demi-human army. The result is a war story told from the receiving end of overwhelming power, which is exactly the angle that gives the series its bite. As a midquel that picks up alongside the story's later anime television material, it lets the established cast and crew work at feature scale, with Madhouse handling animation and the creative team reprising their roles.
What the film offers is density. Across its roughly two-hour runtime it stages a siege, a desperate diplomatic appeal, and the strange discomfort of asking a nation of the undead for salvation. Politics, military maneuvering, and dread sit alongside the anti-hero logic the series is known for, and a young squire caught in the middle gives the carnage a human vantage point. Viewers who enjoy ensemble casts and morally uncomfortable fantasy will find plenty to chew on here.
As an individual work it is approachable for anyone already following the anime, and it is available with an English dub on Crunchyroll and Netflix. Complete newcomers can follow the broad conflict, but this is a chapter that pays off most for those who know the players.

Should You Watch It?
The primary starting work is a movie, so the full film is the natural Volluble Test Drive. This gives you the complete story instead of applying an episodic trial to a feature-length work.
