Synopsis
Subaru Natsuki, a Japanese teenager, is suddenly summoned to a fantasy world. He quickly befriends Emilia, a silver-haired half-elf, but when they are killed, he discovers he can rewind time by dying. He calls this ability 'Return by Death,' though he cannot speak of it without incurring a terrifying penalty. He must use this painful power to prevent tragedies.
The world is the Kingdom of Lugunica, where Emilia is one of several candidates in a royal selection to become the next ruler. Subaru faces the Witch Cult, mysterious curses, and his own psychological limits. Each loop forces him to learn, form alliances, and make difficult sacrifices. Along the way, he forms bonds with allies like the maids Rem and Ram, the spirit Beatrice, and the knight Reinhard.
The story grows across arcs, moving from the capital to a mansion, the Sanctuary, and beyond. Adaptations include the anime, manga chapters, light novels, OVAs, and spin-offs, expanding the cast and lore while keeping Subaru's struggle central. The anime's seasons and the ongoing light novels continue to adapt successive arcs, introducing new kingdoms, trials, and enemies.
