Overview

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie: Part 1 matters as a focused, cinematic continuation of the Sailor Moon Crystal era, bringing the series’ magical-girl ideals into a more expansive space-opera setting. As the first 80-minute installment of a two-part film, it has the unusual task of turning familiar friendship, romance, and transformation motifs toward a much larger conflict. The result is a story with bright heroic imagery and an increasingly grave emotional register, where devotion and hope are tested by loss, cosmic danger, and questions about what gives power meaning.

The experience is ensemble-driven rather than built around action alone. Sailor Guardians, new arrivals, and rival forces create a broad emotional field, while the female-led cast keeps the film grounded in loyalty, found family, and coming of age. Its blend of urban school life, mythology, superpowers, and cosmic horror can appeal to viewers who enjoy fantasy that treats relationships and philosophy as seriously as spectacle. The moderate intensity and themes of death, revenge, and tragedy make it more emotionally demanding than a light magical-girl adventure, but its clear genre language remains approachable for newcomers who appreciate colorful animation, earnest romance, and determined heroes. An English dub and Netflix availability also make this individual film an accessible entry point for viewers ready for a dramatic, high-stakes anime movie.

Synopsis

Usagi Tsukino and her friends are trying to enjoy a quieter period as ordinary high school students when their fragile peace is disrupted. Usagi’s relationship with Mamoru Chiba appears to be entering a new stage as he prepares to study abroad, but a disturbing incident at the airport leaves him gone from her life and Usagi struggling to understand what happened. Unable to face the memory directly, she continues on while carrying grief that she cannot explain.

The arrival of the Sailor Starlights brings another mystery to the city. Their motives are unclear, and their presence coincides with the emergence of Shadow Galactica, a powerful force commanded by Sailor Galaxia. Galaxia targets the Sailor Guardians’ Sailor Crystals, the sources of their abilities, placing Usagi and her allies in an increasingly desperate struggle. As attacks threaten both their powers and their bonds, the Guardians must confront enemies whose reach extends far beyond Earth. Usagi, still guided by her compassion and determination, is pushed toward a conflict that tests her identity as Eternal Sailor Moon, her faith in her friends, and her willingness to protect the future even when hope seems to be disappearing.

Should You Watch It?

Watch it if you enjoy

  • Watch if you enjoy female-led magical-girl adventure expanding into space opera, mythology, and cosmic conflict.
  • Best approached after Sailor Moon Eternal, since this 80-minute movie is the first half of a two-part concluding story.

It may not suit you if

  • May not suit viewers seeking a self-contained film, as Part 1 reserves the larger storyline’s conclusion for Part 2.
  • Its moderate intensity and themes of grief, death, revenge, and tragedy may feel heavy for viewers expecting a lighter school-life adventure.

Production Background

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie: Part 1 is an anime feature adapted from the Stars arc of Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon manga. Takeuchi served as chief supervisor for the project, while Tomoya Takahashi directed and Kazuyuki Fudeyasu wrote the screenplay. The film was produced as a collaboration between Toei Animation and Studio Deen and distributed by Toei Company. As the first installment of a two-part production, Part 1 brings the manga’s final major storyline into the Sailor Moon Crystal anime continuity rather than functioning as a standalone remake of an earlier film.

The movie was released theatrically in Japan on June 9, 2023, ahead of the second film’s June 30 opening. Its listed runtime is approximately 80 minutes, reflecting its role as one half of the larger Cosmos adaptation. The official production site later promoted the home-video release of the films, including Blu-ray and DVD material, in December 2023. Those promotions included audio-commentary previews, character-focused advertisements, and other feature-related content, providing additional production publicity after the theatrical run. Part 1 is also available with an English dub through Netflix, extending the film’s release beyond its original Japanese theatrical presentation.

Franchise Context

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie: Part 1 is the first half of the two-part Cosmos anime film project. It is a continuation rather than a remake or spin-off, following Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal and extending the Sailor Moon Crystal adaptation into its fifth and final season. This entry covers only the first film, while Part 2 completes the larger Cosmos storyline.

The film adapts the Stars arc of Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon manga, placing it within the main Sailor Moon narrative rather than presenting a separate continuity. As a manga-based anime movie, it continues the established cast and setting in a feature-length format, with the story’s concluding material reserved for the companion film. Its place in the franchise is therefore best understood as a late-series continuation and the opening installment of the animated Cosmos finale.
