Overview
Sword Art Online is a multimedia franchise represented in Volluble by 54 connected works across 6 media categories. This hub organizes the franchise by release chronology and gives newcomers a clear starting point.
Synopsis
Sword Art Online centers on Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya, a teenage gamer who logs into the titular virtual-reality MMORPG and finds himself among thousands of players unable to log out. The game’s creator declares that dying inside the game means dying in the real world, and the only escape is to clear all one hundred floors of the floating castle Aincrad. Kirito, a solitary but skilled player, fights through traps, monsters, and rival guilds while forming a close bond with Asuna and other survivors.
As the story progresses, the focus expands beyond Aincrad into other virtual worlds, including fairy-themed ALfheim Online, the gun-focused Gun Gale Online, and the artificial realm Underworld. Kirito and his friends face new technologies, conspiracies, and emotional stakes, while side stories and spin-offs follow different players and perspectives.
The franchise grows across light novels, manga adaptations, anime seasons, films, and alternate retellings such as Progressive, which revisits Aincrad floor by floor. Across these versions, Sword Art Online remains an action-driven adventure about connection, identity, and the blurred line between digital and real worlds.
