The PS5 Pro is selling out at major U.S. retailers just months before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives, with the shortage emerging immediately after Rockstar Games released its massive new extended look at GTA 6.
Best Buy currently lists Sony’s premium PlayStation 5 console as unavailable for shipping, while reports indicate that Target and other major retailers have also experienced depleted inventory. Where consoles are still appearing through third-party sellers, asking prices have climbed as high as roughly $1,200 to $1,300.
The timing is hard to ignore. Rockstar’s new 26-minute GTA 6 presentation gave players their clearest look yet at the game running on PlayStation 5, and the response appears to be translating into hardware demand. For anyone planning to upgrade before GTA 6 launches on November 19, the sudden shortage creates a new question: buy a PS5 Pro when one appears at retail price, or wait for Sony to replenish inventory?
PS5 Pro Is Selling Out at Major Retailers
As of August 30, Best Buy’s U.S. product page lists the PS5 Pro at $899.99 but marks the console as “Unavailable.” Shipping is unavailable on the listing checked by Volluble, and Best Buy labels the system a “High Demand Product.”
That is not an isolated report. GamesRadar reported that PS5 Pro systems had become difficult to find following the GTA 6 reveal, with Best Buy and Target among the retailers showing depleted stock. Notebookcheck independently reported a similar pattern across major U.S. retailers.
Availability is not necessarily gone everywhere. Retail inventory changes constantly, and PlayStation Direct has remained one of the better places to look for the console at Sony’s normal price. That makes claims that the PS5 Pro is completely “sold out everywhere” too broad.
Still, the larger trend is clear. Buying a new PS5 Pro at its standard retail price has become considerably harder in the immediate aftermath of the GTA 6 presentation.
Third-Party PS5 Pro Prices Are Reaching $1,200 to $1,300
The more concerning part of the shortage is what happens when normal retail inventory disappears.
GamesRadar found PS5 Pro consoles being offered through third-party sellers for as much as approximately $1,300. Notebookcheck also reported listings around $1,299 on marketplaces where sellers can set their own prices. Other resale listings have appeared around the $1,200 mark.
| PS5 Pro Option | Approximate Price | What Buyers Should Know |
|---|---|---|
| Official Sony retail price | $899 | Normal price through PlayStation Direct |
| Best Buy retail price | $899.99 | Listed as unavailable when checked August 30 |
| Third-party/resale listings | Up to roughly $1,200-$1,300 | Large markup caused by limited availability |
At $1,300, a buyer would be paying roughly $400 more than Sony’s current $899 direct price. That is nearly a 45 percent premium simply to avoid waiting for inventory to return.
There is little reason for most buyers to pay it.
GTA 6 does not launch until November 19, 2026. Sony still has time to replenish PS5 Pro inventory before Rockstar’s game reaches players. Unless someone needs the console immediately, paying hundreds of dollars above retail is a poor trade for avoiding a potentially temporary shortage.
Did GTA 6 Cause the PS5 Pro Shortage?
There is strong circumstantial evidence that GTA 6 contributed to the sudden demand spike, but the distinction between correlation and confirmed causation matters.
Rockstar released a roughly 26-minute extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI on August 27. The presentation debuted through Netflix before becoming available more broadly, giving players an unusually long look at Vice City, protagonists Jason and Lucia, combat, vehicles, interiors, NPCs, and Rockstar’s new open world.
The footage was captured on the standard PlayStation 5 rather than the Pro model. That detail arguably makes the PS5 Pro buying rush even more interesting.
If GTA 6 already looks this ambitious on the base PS5, some players are clearly thinking ahead to what Sony’s more powerful console might offer.
What has not been established is that every recent PS5 Pro sale, or even most of them, happened specifically because of GTA 6. Retail sales data tying individual purchases to the game has not been released publicly. Other upcoming PlayStation releases and normal fluctuations in inventory can also affect availability.
The safest conclusion is that the shortage coincided with a massive burst of GTA 6 attention and that multiple gaming outlets are seeing the same pattern. Calling GTA 6 the only cause goes further than the available evidence supports.
Why Players Are Looking at PS5 Pro for GTA 6
Grand Theft Auto VI is exactly the kind of game that makes premium console hardware easier to justify.
Rockstar’s extended presentation showed an extraordinarily dense version of Vice City filled with traffic, crowds, detailed interiors, reflections, lighting effects, vegetation, water, and long sightlines. Maintaining that level of simulation while rendering Rockstar’s enormous open world is a demanding workload.
The standard PS5 footage already demonstrates how aggressively Rockstar is pushing the hardware. For players buying a console specifically for GTA 6, spending more on the Pro model can therefore feel like a way to get the best available PlayStation experience from day one.
There is a catch.
Players should not buy a PS5 Pro under the assumption that GTA 6 will automatically run at 60 frames per second.
Rockstar has not announced a 60 FPS PS5 Pro mode. Recent reporting surrounding the extended preview indicates that the console version currently targets 30 FPS, while detailed PS5 Pro performance options have not been formally laid out.
That distinction matters because the PS5 Pro’s additional power can be used in different ways. Rockstar could prioritize image quality, ray tracing, resolution, more stable performance, or some combination of those improvements. Until Rockstar or Sony publishes the exact PS5 Pro specifications for GTA 6, buyers should treat specific performance claims as unconfirmed.
GTA 6 Is Becoming a Console Seller Before It Even Launches
The bigger story may not be a temporary PS5 Pro shortage. It is what the shortage says about the scale of GTA 6.
Console generations often have games that convince people to finally upgrade. Grand Theft Auto VI has the unusual potential to do that on a massive scale because it arrives more than a decade after Grand Theft Auto V and will initially target current-generation consoles.
For someone still playing primarily on a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC, GTA 6 creates a hardware decision that did not previously exist. Players who choose PlayStation then have another decision between the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro.
That makes Rockstar’s game a hardware sales driver for Sony without being a PlayStation exclusive.
The effect could become much larger as November approaches.
GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, placing the launch directly in the holiday shopping period. If millions of players decide they want new hardware at roughly the same time, console inventory could become one of the less obvious stories surrounding the game’s release.
Should You Pay $1,200 or More for a PS5 Pro?
For most players, no.
The current shortage does not mean Sony has discontinued the PS5 Pro, nor does it mean the console will remain unavailable through the GTA 6 launch. This is a mass-produced current-generation system, not a limited collector’s edition.
Paying $1,200 to $1,300 also changes the value proposition dramatically. At Sony’s $899 price, the PS5 Pro is already positioned as premium hardware. Adding another $300 or $400 solely because a third-party seller happens to have inventory makes the system considerably harder to justify.
There is also enough time before November 19 for stock conditions to change repeatedly.
Players looking for a PS5 Pro should check PlayStation Direct first, followed by major authorized retailers. If the only option is a heavily marked-up marketplace listing, waiting is the more sensible move.
One exception is legitimate open-box inventory. Best Buy, for example, was showing open-box PS5 Pro options below the price of a new system when Volluble checked its listing. Availability varies by location, and buyers should inspect the condition and return policy before purchasing.
What Happens Next for PS5 Pro Stock?
The next few weeks should reveal whether this is a brief post-trailer rush or the beginning of sustained GTA 6-driven hardware demand.
Sony has an obvious incentive to get PS5 Pro units onto shelves before November. GTA 6 is one of the strongest possible demonstrations for premium console hardware, even though the game is also launching on Xbox Series X|S.
For players, the strategy is simple: do not panic-buy.
Check PlayStation Direct and established retailers regularly, compare the actual seller rather than just the marketplace name, and avoid treating a $1,200 listing as the new normal price. Sony’s current direct price remains $899.
The fact that a $899 console can become difficult to find after a single GTA 6 presentation is remarkable on its own. If this demand continues as November 19 approaches, GTA 6 may end up moving far more than copies of the game. It could trigger one of the biggest late-generation hardware upgrade waves the PS5 has seen.
