The Apothecary Diaries live-action series is officially happening, with Prime Video confirming a worldwide release planned for 2028. Japanese actress Mana Ashida will take the lead role as Maomao, bringing one of anime’s most recognizable mystery-solving protagonists into live action.
The project will be co-produced by TOHO and Amazon MGM Studios. Yuki Saito is directing the series, while Erika Yoshida is handling the screenplay.
For fans of the anime, the announcement does not signal a shift away from animation. Quite the opposite. The Apothecary Diaries is currently expanding across several formats at once, with a third anime season beginning in October 2026, a theatrical movie arriving in December, and the new live-action production following in 2028.

Prime Video Japan announced the adaptation on September 3, 2026, alongside the first teaser visual showing Mana Ashida in costume as Maomao.

Mana Ashida Will Play Maomao
Mana Ashida has been selected to play Maomao, the apothecary whose intelligence, medical knowledge, curiosity, and near-unhealthy fascination with poisons drive much of the original story.
International audiences may recognize Ashida from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, where she played the younger version of Mako Mori. She has maintained a lengthy acting career in Japan since beginning as a child performer.
There is also a useful bit of reassurance for longtime readers. Ashida was already a fan of Natsu Hyuuga’s novels before being cast in the adaptation. In comments released alongside the announcement, she described both the excitement and pressure of taking on a character from a series she already loved.
Original author Natsu Hyuuga has also responded positively to the casting. Hyuuga visited the production and praised the amount of detail being put into areas including the sets, costumes, props, makeup, character movement, and palace etiquette.
That attention will matter. The Apothecary Diaries depends heavily on its setting. The rear palace is not simply a backdrop for Maomao’s investigations. Its hierarchy, customs, clothing, medicine, politics, and social rules frequently become part of the mysteries themselves.
Jinshi Has Apparently Been Cast, but Prime Video Is Keeping It Secret
The other casting decision fans will immediately want to know about is Jinshi.
His actor has not officially been revealed yet, but comments from Natsu Hyuuga indicate that the live-action Jinshi has already been cast. The author’s account of seeing the actor during a set visit strongly suggests that production is considerably further along than the initial announcement alone might make it appear.
Prime Video is keeping that casting announcement for another day.
Given how central the chemistry between Maomao and Jinshi is to the series, the reveal will probably be one of the biggest pieces of news during the live-action show’s rollout.

The Apothecary Diaries began as a web novel by Natsu Hyuuga before becoming a light novel series illustrated by Toko Shino. The franchise has since expanded into manga and anime adaptations.
The story follows Maomao, a young apothecary raised in the pleasure district who is kidnapped and sold into service at an imperial palace. She initially wants to quietly finish her term of service and leave.
Maomao being Maomao, that plan does not last very long.
Her knowledge of medicine and poisons draws her into a mysterious illness affecting the emperor’s children. Her investigation eventually catches the attention of the influential palace official Jinshi, who realizes that the supposedly ordinary servant is considerably more capable than she wants anyone to know.
From there, the series develops into a mixture of medical mystery, palace drama, political intrigue, comedy, and slow-burning character relationships.
The formula has become extremely successful. Prime Video’s announcement states that the wider The Apothecary Diaries franchise has surpassed 57 million copies in circulation worldwide.
The Live-Action Series Is Only One Part of a Huge Apothecary Diaries Expansion
The timing of the live-action announcement is especially interesting because The Apothecary Diaries already has a packed release schedule.
Season 3 of the anime begins its first cour on October 2, 2026. The season is using a split-cour format, with the second half scheduled to begin in April 2027.
Between those two parts, The Apothecary Diaries will also move into theaters. TOHO currently lists The Apothecary Diaries: The Movie for a December 11, 2026 release in Japan. The movie features an original story concept from Natsu Hyuuga rather than simply retelling an existing anime arc.
Then comes the Prime Video drama in 2028.
That gives the franchise three major screen formats operating within roughly two years: television anime, theatrical animation, and live-action streaming television.
TOHO has already made clear that it sees The Apothecary Diaries as more than a short-term anime hit. In company materials released earlier in 2026, TOHO described the property as a particularly strong IP with an enthusiastic domestic and international audience and discussed continuing to expand its presence through anime, movies, merchandise, and other fan touchpoints.
The Prime Video deal fits directly into that strategy.
What the Live-Action Adaptation Means for the Series
Live-action anime and light novel adaptations always bring some understandable hesitation. Stories built around stylized character designs, elaborate settings, and exaggerated comedic reactions do not automatically translate well when real actors and physical sets enter the equation.
The Apothecary Diaries, though, is a more natural candidate than many anime franchises.
Most of its appeal comes from dialogue, mysteries, medicine, political maneuvering, character relationships, and Maomao’s ability to notice details everyone else overlooks. None of those elements require enormous fantasy battles or constant visual effects.
The bigger challenge is recreating the palace convincingly and maintaining Maomao’s personality. She is funny because she can be intensely interested in poison while remaining almost completely unimpressed by things that would overwhelm everyone around her. Flatten that personality into a generic television detective and much of the character disappears.
The production team’s apparent investment in detailed sets, costumes, etiquette, and movement is therefore encouraging. Whether the completed series captures the same appeal as the novels, manga, and anime will have to wait until audiences see actual footage.

The next major live-action announcements should include the actor playing Jinshi, additional cast members, a more specific 2028 release window, and eventually the first trailer.
There is no need for anime fans to wait until then for more The Apothecary Diaries. Season 3 begins on October 2, 2026, followed by the Japanese theatrical release of the anime movie on December 11.
The live-action version is another branch of a franchise that is clearly becoming much larger than the original anime adaptation.
For now, Mana Ashida has the difficult job of turning Maomao into a convincing live-action character. Prime Video appears willing to give the project a sizable international stage when it arrives in 2028.
