Synopsis
Rimuru Tempest, a former salaryman reborn in another world as a slime, has just wrapped up the founding festival of his monster nation, Tempest. With the celebrations behind him, he and his companions accept a summons from Elmesia, the influential empress of the Sorcerous Dynasty of Thalion, and settle in for a short vacation at her private resort island.
Their rest is cut short by Yura, a mysterious girl who comes from Kaien, a kingdom on the ocean floor whose people revere a water dragon as their guardian deity. Yura serves as a shrine maiden, and she has traveled to the surface in search of aid, carrying a flute handed down within her family.
She brings word that someone intends to rouse the sleeping water dragon and lead an attack on the surface. Moved by her plea, Rimuru and his friends set out across the open sea, aiming to head off the danger and safeguard both Kaien and the world above.

Should You Watch It?
Watch it if you enjoy
- Watch if you enjoy TenSura's mix of nation-building, comedy, and fantasy action, now applied to a self-contained sea adventure.
- Watch if you want an original movie supervised by creator Fuse, set after Tempest's founding festival with Rimuru's established cast.
- Watch if you like underwater kingdoms, guardian dragons, and shrine-maiden quests folded into an isekai power fantasy.
It may not suit you if
- May not suit viewers new to TenSura; the film assumes familiarity with Rimuru, his companions, and Tempest's founding festival.
- May not suit those seeking a main-story arc; this is an optional theatrical side story rather than a required franchise step.
- May not suit viewers who prefer darker or more complex isekai; the tone remains mild and adventure-comedy focused.
The primary starting work is a movie, so the full film is the natural Volluble Test Drive. This gives you the complete story instead of applying an episodic trial to a feature-length work.
Why It Connects With Audiences
Why people love it
- The film expands TenSura's world cinematically, moving from kingdom management to an ocean-floor kingdom and its water dragon lore.
- Rimuru's established companions and the Tempest ensemble get a vacation-turned-rescue setup that can appeal to fans of the group dynamic.
- The original story and Fuse's full supervision may reassure viewers who want a canonical-feeling side adventure rather than a loose spinoff.
Common criticisms
- Some viewers may find the premise familiar: a mysterious girl asks Rimuru for help, leading to a rescue mission against a looming threat.
- As an original theatrical side story, it may feel skippable to those focused on the main TV or light novel storyline.
- The film's reliance on prior franchise knowledge could leave newcomers feeling out of the loop.

Franchise Context
This movie sits within the TenSura franchise, the broader That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime property that began as Fuse's web novel and light novel series and expanded into a TV anime produced by Eight Bit, OVAs, and theatrical films. It is the second theatrical film in that franchise, following the television seasons and the earlier movie. As an individual entry, it is a continuation rather than a starting point or a retelling.
The film is an original story rather than a direct adaptation of a specific light novel or manga arc. Fuse provided the original concept and complete supervision, and the movie is positioned after the Tempest founding festival, with Rimuru and his companions already established. That places it in the same continuity as the anime while allowing a self-contained cinematic adventure.
The larger franchise also includes a planned fourth TV season and game tie-ins, so this film remains one branch of a continuing multimedia series rather than a reboot or stand-alone property.
Where This Fits in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime franchise.
-
Step 1
Begin with the TV anime from its first season, since this film assumes you already know Rimuru Tempest, his companions, and the nation of Tempest.
-
Step 2
Work through the earlier TV seasons and the earlier theatrical film before this one. Tears of the Azure Sea is the second TenSura film, and its story opens right after Tempest's founding festival, so it sits late in the animated timeline.
-
Step 3
Treat this film as an optional, original side adventure rather than a required step. Its plot is a self-contained sea voyage with an original story supervised by the creator, so it can be skipped without breaking the main storyline.
-
Step 4
After finishing, return to the main TV anime or the light novel and manga, where the central storyline continues.
Franchise Path
- Begin with the TenSura TV anime from season 1 to meet Rimuru, his companions, and Tempest.
- Watch the earlier TV seasons and the first TenSura theatrical film before this second movie.
- Tears of the Azure Sea is an original side adventure set after Tempest's founding festival, not a new starting point.
After You Finish
Continue with
- Return to the main TenSura TV anime or the light novel/manga, where the central storyline continues.
- Later TenSura TV seasons and game tie-ins continue the same franchise branch after this film.
- Skipping this movie is possible because its sea-voyage plot is largely self-contained.
