Overview
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is a side story within the wider Sword Art Online franchise, built by writer Keiichi Sigsawa around a fresh cast rather than around the main series' familiar heroes. This manga adaptation, illustrated by Tadadi Tamori, carries that story onto the page and keeps its focus tight on a single virtual world and the players competing inside it. Readers who are curious about the setting but hesitant to commit to the parent saga will find this an approachable place to start.
The experience here is narrower and more mechanical than the flagship series: a battle royale shooter played inside a VR game, driven by weapon detail, squad tactics, and the steady pressure of a shrinking play area. What gives it a human center is Karen Kohiruimaki, a self conscious and unusually tall high schooler who reinvents herself online as Llenn, a small, pink, confident competitor. That gap between player and avatar is where the work's humor and its quieter emotional beats live.
Readers drawn to competitive game fiction, gun detail, and a female lead who is allowed to be both awkward and capable should find plenty to enjoy. The action-forward stretches suit fans of combat heavy manga, while the character work keeps it from becoming only a shooting gallery. Yen Press publishes the series in English, and although it stands on its own, some familiarity with the franchise's virtual world premise adds context.
Synopsis
Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online centers on Kohiruimaki Karen, an introverted high school student who has always been self-conscious about her unusually tall frame. Because everyday life makes her uncomfortable, she retreats into virtual reality, where a player can adopt a body and identity completely unlike their own. Inside the gun-focused online game Gun Gale Online she becomes LLENN, a short, boldly pink avatar who carries a P90 submachine gun and moves faster than most opponents expect.
Set in the same virtual world as Sword Art Online but following a separate cast of characters, the story unfolds in the aftermath of the NerveGear incident that left players wary of full-dive games. Gun Gale Online offers a different sort of danger, built around player-versus-player firefights rather than swords and monsters. Karen commits herself to the game's competitive scene with the goal of winning a battle royale, and her compact, agile avatar proves to be a real advantage in close-range combat.
The main conflict grows out of that ambition. Karen has to outlast heavily armed squads while forming partnerships with other players whose motives are not always clear to her. What starts as an escape from her own insecurities gradually becomes a test of nerve, cooperation, and how far she is willing to push herself for a victory she actually cares about.
Should You Read It?
Read it if you enjoy
- Read if you want a self-contained Sword Art Online side story that follows Karen/Llenn rather than the main SAO cast.
- Read if you enjoy VR battle-royale fiction centered on gun detail, squad tactics, and a shrinking play area.
- Read if you like a female lead who is allowed to be awkward offline and confident inside the game.
It may not suit you if
- May not suit readers who want Kirito, Asuna, or the flagship SAO storyline; this follows a separate cast.
- May not suit those who prefer broad fantasy adventure over close-range shooter mechanics and PvP firefights.
- May not suit readers seeking a gentle virtual-world story; the premise centers on competitive battle-royale stakes.
Why It Connects With Audiences
Why people love it
- The contrast between tall, self-conscious Karen and tiny, pink, P90-wielding Llenn gives the story a memorable human center.
- The battle-royale setup keeps pressure steady through weapon detail, squad tactics, and a shrinking play area.
- As a spin-off with a fresh protagonist, it offers an approachable entry point for curious readers.
Common criticisms
- Some readers may find the experience narrower and more mechanical than the flagship series, with less sweeping lore.
- The focus on a single VR shooter and its competitive scene may limit appeal for those wanting broader SAO worldbuilding.
- Because it follows a separate cast, it may feel less essential to readers invested in the main franchise arc.

Production Background
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online originated as a light novel series written by Keiichi Sigsawa and illustrated by Kouhaku Kuroboshi. The series launched on December 10, 2014 and is still releasing. It is a spin-off of Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online, but it stands apart by following its own protagonist, the introverted high school student Kohiruimaki Karen, who escapes her self-consciousness about her height by playing the small, all-pink avatar Ren in the Gun Gale Online battle royale.
A manga adaptation by Tadadi Tamori began in 2015, giving the story a second visual form. Yen Press publishes the light novels and the manga in North America. The work is catalogued with action, fantasy and science fiction genres, and with themes that include online gaming, virtual reality, survival games, guns and a female lead.
The property later expanded beyond print, with an anime television adaptation from studio 3Hz airing from April to June 2018 and a second season produced by A-1 Pictures premiering in October 2024. Those adaptations sit alongside the original light novel run and the manga, both of which continue to be released.
Franchise Path
- Start with this Gun Gale Online side story; it follows Karen/Llenn and its own cast, so prior Sword Art Online main-series knowledge is not required.
- Within the same franchise, the light novel origin, Tadadi Tamori's manga adaptation, and the 2018/2024 anime TV adaptations present the same Gun Gale Online storyline in different formats.
- For a broader franchise path after this, the main Sword Art Online series is the parent saga, while this Alternative entry remains a separate, self-contained branch.
After You Finish
Continue with
- Continue with later Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online volumes as they release from Yen Press.
- If you prefer anime, continue with the 2018 TV adaptation and its 2024 second season within the same Gun Gale Online branch.
- No direct sequel beyond the ongoing Gun Gale Online volumes is needed to complete this side-story experience; it stands apart from the main SAO storyline.
