Synopsis

Berserk is a dark fantasy saga set in a brutal medieval world of warring kingdoms, mercenary bands, and hidden supernatural forces. Its central figure is Guts, a lone swordsman scarred by violence and branded by demonic powers, who wields a massive blade against apostles, monstrous servants of the God Hand. Haunted by a catastrophic betrayal and driven to protect the woman he loves, Casca, Guts struggles against a destiny that seems to demand his suffering.

The story begins with Guts as the Black Swordsman, then travels back to his youth among the Band of the Hawk and its charismatic leader, Griffith. Their rise, bond, and tragic falling-out shape the series' defining conflict. Later arcs widen the scope from personal revenge to a world transformed by Griffith's ambitions, with kingdoms, witches, and ordinary people caught between human cruelty and inhuman evil.

Across manga, television anime, and film, Berserk broadens from a raw revenge tale into an epic meditation on friendship, ambition, trauma, and perseverance. The 1997 series and the Golden Age film trilogy dramatize Guts's past, while later anime and the Memorial Edition continue the journey. A spin-off novel explores other corners of the world, but the core remains Guts's fierce, costly struggle to live on his own terms.
