Overview

Berserk 2 is the 2017 twelve-episode television season that picks up the modern screen telling of Kentaro Miura's dark fantasy manga, and it matters because this is the stretch where the story's cruelty and its loyalty become inseparable. The world around Guts has curdled into chaos, demons are no longer a rumor, and his journey is weighed down by a companion he must protect rather than simply avenge. For viewers who came for swordplay, the season delivers it, but the deeper pull is the way it treats damage as something carried rather than cured. Its full CGI production gives the work a distinctive, often divisive look, and that stylistic choice is worth approaching on its own terms rather than as a quiet continuation of hand-drawn fantasy.

The experience is heavy: horror, gore, tragedy, and a cast that rarely gets a safe night. Puck's talk of a distant safe haven gives the season a faint forward momentum, a goal to walk toward even when every road costs something. That mixture of bleakness and stubborn hope is what separates this material from routine revenge fantasy.

Approachable for adult and older teen viewers who already enjoy seinen dark fantasy, military intrigue, and supernatural horror, though it is a continuation rather than a starting point, so newcomers should begin earlier in the saga or with the manga. Streaming on Crunchyroll makes the season easy to reach for returning fans.

Synopsis

This 2017 television season continues the dark fantasy tale of Guts, a wandering swordsman marked by a demonic brand that draws restless spirits and monsters toward him wherever he goes. The kingdom of Midland has collapsed into disorder, and demons have become an everyday danger rather than a distant legend. Guts can no longer travel alone as he once did, because he now guards Casca, a woman left hollowed out by past horrors, who neither remembers him nor trusts him.

Their journey is shaped by a single fragile hope. Puck, an elf companion, speaks of Elfhelm, a mystical land said to offer refuge from the demons that ravage the world. Reaching it means crossing hostile territory with little more than rumor to guide them, and Guts must fight constantly to keep Casca safe while he searches for any way to restore her.

Alongside that struggle runs a harder question, who is responsible for the suffering that shattered them both. Guts carries a consuming desire for revenge, and this season balances his duty as a protector against the rage that drives him. Across its twelve episodes the story mixes swordplay, supernatural horror, and tragedy as the small group presses on toward a sanctuary they can only hope truly exists.

Should You Watch It?

Watch it if you enjoy

  • Watch if you want a dark-fantasy continuation where Guts guards Casca while hunting answers, with swordplay, demons and a fragile hope in Elfhelm.
  • Watch if you already know the earlier anime or manga; this 2017 season opens with Guts, Casca and Puck already travelling and assumes that context.
  • Watch if you value seinen tragedy and military chaos, and can handle a story that treats damage as carried rather than cured.
  • Watch if you are following the Berserk franchise and want this 12-episode TV stretch, available through Crunchyroll.

It may not suit you if

  • May not suit if you avoid frequent supernatural horror, gore and tragedy; the season rarely offers its cast a safe night.
  • May not suit if you want a clean starting point; it is the second season of its anime adaptation and not a standalone entry.
  • May not suit if hand-drawn fantasy is essential; this season uses full CGI, a distinctive and often divisive production choice.
  • May not suit if you need resolution; the journey toward Elfhelm and Casca's healing remains ongoing, with the manga continuing beyond this season.

Why It Connects With Audiences

Why people love it

  • Its central pull is the balance between Guts's consuming revenge and his duty to protect Casca, tying cruelty to loyalty.
  • Puck's talk of Elfhelm gives the group a faint but stubborn forward momentum, a goal worth walking toward even when roads cost.
  • The season delivers swordplay, supernatural horror and tragedy in a world where demons are everyday danger rather than distant legend.
  • As a main anime installment adapting Miura's manga, it offers a later stretch of Guts's journey for franchise followers.

Common criticisms

  • The full CGI production is often divisive, and viewers may miss the hand-drawn look associated with earlier fantasy adaptations.
  • It assumes you remember the prior season and why the demonic brand keeps the group moving, so newcomers may feel dropped in.
  • Its bleakness, gore and Casca's trauma can make the season feel relentless rather than balanced.
  • It adapts a later manga stretch and ends as one route toward Elfhelm, so some may find it incomplete without continuing the source.

Franchise Context

Berserk 2 is a television anime entry within the Berserk franchise, which began with Kentaro Miura's manga. Miura first presented a prototype in 1988, and the series started publication the following year in Hakusensha's Monthly Animal House, later moving to the semimonthly Young Animal in 1992. The anime line exists alongside that ongoing manga rather than replacing it, and Berserk 2 is positioned as the second season of the television adaptation, a continuation of the story rather than its opening chapter.

The entry is listed as a main anime installment in the franchise, released in 2017 with twelve episodes. Its source material is the manga, so it adapts a later stretch of Guts's journey rather than telling an original or stand-alone story, and it functions as one part of a larger, multi-format franchise.

The manga has continued past Miura's death in May 2021, with the final chapter he worked on published in September of that year and serialization resuming in June 2022 under the supervision of Kouji Mori. Berserk 2 remains its own distinct 2017 season, available through Crunchyroll.

Where This Fits in Berserk

A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Berserk franchise.

Exact position: This is Main anime entry 3 and main anime entry 3 of 4. It follows Berserk (2016).

  1. Step 1
Treat this as the second season of its anime adaptation: start with the earlier season first, because this 2017 run opens with Guts, Casca and Puck already travelling together and assumes you know why the demonic brand keeps them moving.
  2. Step 2
If you would rather follow the original version, begin with Kentaro Miura's manga, which has been the source material for the whole story since its serialisation began in 1989.
  3. Step 3
These 12 episodes are not skippable within their own adaptation, but they are one route through the journey toward Elfhelm rather than a standalone entry, so readers of the manga can treat them as an alternate way to reach the same stretch of story.
  4. Step 4
Once this season ends, continue in the manga, where the final chapter Miura worked on was published in 2021 and the series resumed in June 2022 under Kouji Mori's supervision.

Franchise Path

  2. Berserk (2016)
