Overview
Girls und Panzer das Finale – Part 1 is a compact return to the series’ distinctive blend of school-club warmth, military detail, and sports-like competition. At 47 minutes, this anime movie favors momentum over extended setup, using the excitement of armored contests to keep a large ensemble moving while giving Momo Kawashima a particularly important role. The result is less a standalone introduction than a focused continuation for viewers who enjoy tactical action with an upbeat, character-driven tone.
What makes this installment appealing is the contrast between its playful premise and the seriousness with which it treats teamwork, leadership, and competition. Tanks provide the mechanical spectacle, but the experience is shaped just as much by shifting responsibilities and the personalities within the predominantly female cast. Fans of action anime, school stories, and sports narratives may find its combination especially approachable, while viewers seeking grim military drama may be surprised by its bright, personable energy. As the first part of a larger film sequence, it is best approached with familiarity with the wider Girls und Panzer setting, but its concise format makes it an easy choice for returning viewers who want another energetic round of strategic battles.
Synopsis
Ōarai Girls' Academy returns to tankery competition with an unusually personal objective. Momo Kawashima is struggling with her university entrance exams, and the team devises a way to help her improve her prospects. If Ōarai can win the Winter Continuous Track Cup, Momo will have a stronger recommendation and a chance to retake the exams. The tournament gives the students a demanding goal, but it also places Momo's future directly alongside the club's hopes of victory.
To give Momo the opportunity to lead, Miho Nishizumi steps down from her usual commanding role and serves as vice-commander while Momo takes charge of Ōarai's tanks. The change tests both Momo's ability to direct the team and the group's willingness to adapt under pressure. Their path begins with a confrontation against BC Freedom Academy, whose skilled crew and distinctive battlefield approach make the competition a serious challenge. As the match develops, Ōarai must coordinate its varied vehicles and personalities, balance bold tactics with teamwork, and prove that its trust in Momo can hold when the contest becomes difficult. The film combines school life and military-style sport as its ensemble cast fights for tankery supremacy on the field and a better future for one of its commanders beyond it.

Production Background
Girls und Panzer das Finale - Part 1 is an original Japanese animated film rather than an adaptation of a manga or novel. It was produced by Actas and distributed by Showgate as the opening installment of a planned six-part film series. Tsutomu Mizushima directed the film, with a screenplay by Reiko Yoshida. The production continued the story in a movie format after the earlier television anime and film, while retaining an ensemble cast drawn from the preceding installments.
The sequel project was greenlit in August 2016, and Part 1 was released in Japan on December 9, 2017. It is a single 47-minute movie, giving the opening chapter a compact theatrical structure rather than the episode count associated with a television season. The film centers on the next stage of the story involving Ōarai Girls' Academy, Momo Kawashima's university entrance concerns, and the Winter Continuous Track Cup. Miho Nishizumi steps aside as commander so Momo can take that role, placing the team's competitive campaign at the center of this installment. The official project site separately lists the later Finale parts and related releases, reinforcing that this entry is one chapter in an ongoing film production rather than a standalone conclusion.
Franchise Context
Girls und Panzer das Finale – Part 1 is the opening installment of the six-part Girls und Panzer das Finale film series. It continues the story of the 2012 Girls und Panzer television anime and the 2015 film Girls und Panzer der Film, so it is a sequel rather than a remake, spin-off, or adaptation of another work. Like the earlier anime, it is an original production rather than an adaptation of manga or novel source material.
This entry begins the Finale storyline, which centers on Ōarai Girls' Academy helping Momo Kawashima with her university entrance prospects through the Winter Continuous Track Cup. Miho Nishizumi steps down from the commander position so Momo can lead the team, giving this continuation a new immediate objective while retaining the established ensemble cast and tankery setting. Part 1 is therefore best watched after the original television series and Girls und Panzer der Film, before the remaining Finale installments.
