Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest Zero

Overview

This prequel turns the Arifureta spotlight away from Hajime Nagumo and onto the older generation whose choices shaped the world he later inherits. Following the Synergist Oscar Orcus and the relentless Miledi Reisen, it stands as a self-contained adventure that rewards familiarity with the parent story while asking little of newcomers beyond a taste for dungeon-crawling fantasy.

Its appeal lies in craft and consequence. Oscar is a reluctant hero, a working tradesman who would rather keep his head down than chase a divine war, and the story draws momentum from watching that reluctance erode. The tone is leaner and more grounded than the mainline narrative, treating artifacts, guild economics, and the slow accumulation of skill as genuinely meaningful. Readers who value worldbuilding over power escalation often find this the more satisfying half of the franchise.

Approachable for teens and adults comfortable with mainstream action fantasy, it suits anyone curious about the historical backdrop of Tortus or simply wanting a complete, finite adventure: six volumes, thirty-six chapters, and a definite ending. It is not the franchise's entry point, and readers seeking Hajime's journey should begin elsewhere. As a companion piece, though, it lends weight to everything that follows.

Synopsis

Set generations before Hajime Nagumo is pulled into Tortus, Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest Zero follows Oscar Orcus, a Synergist who makes his living through crafting and deliberately keeps his head down. The money he earns supports an orphanage, and his ambitions reach no further than a steady, unremarkable routine. That routine collapses when Miledi Reisen forces her way into his life with an offer he never asked for: join her in a quest to defeat the gods themselves.

Oscar refuses, unwilling to trade his responsibilities for that kind of danger. The danger he hoped to avoid, however, soon arrives on his own doorstep rather than waiting for his answer. What starts as an unwanted interruption draws him into a journey of magic, invention, and reluctant heroism, where his craft and his conscience are tested at every step.

This prequel series stands on its own within the wider Arifureta setting, chronicling an earlier era and the people whose choices echo through the legend later generations inherit.

Should You Read It?

Why It Connects With Audiences

Why people love it

  • The prequel shifts focus to the older generation, letting Oscar and Miledi’s choices shape the world Hajime later inherits.
  • Oscar’s reluctant-hero arc and conscience-driven choices give the adventure a grounded emotional throughline.
  • Its attention to artifacts, guild economics, and gradual skill accumulation appeals to worldbuilding-focused readers.
  • A finished six-volume, thirty-six-chapter run offers a self-contained adventure with a definite ending.

Common criticisms

  • It is not the franchise’s entry point and may rely on familiarity with the main Arifureta story for full impact.
  • Readers wanting Hajime’s journey or a faster power fantasy may find the prequel’s focus and pace less immediately satisfying.
  • Its leaner, more grounded approach can feel like a departure from the mainline series’ tone and escalation.
  • As an optional prequel, it may feel inessential to some who want only the central Tortus narrative.

Where This Fits in Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest

A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest franchise.

  1. Step 1
Begin with the main Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest series if you want the central Hajime storyline first; Zero is a prequel set long before his arrival on Tortus.
  2. Step 2
Treat Arifureta Zero as an optional prequel rather than the required entry point. It follows Oscar Orcus and Miledi Reisen, so its lore lands harder after you know the main series.
  3. Step 3
Read this Zero manga after at least the first main Arifureta arc, or after the main series if you want to avoid early lore reveals.
  4. Step 4
After finishing Zero, continue or return to the main Arifureta series for the present-day storyline.

Franchise Path

  1. Start with main Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest for Hajime's story, then read Zero as a prequel.
  2. If reading Zero first, treat it as an optional prequel set generations before Tortus's main era.

After You Finish

Continue with

  • Continue with the main Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest series to see Hajime's present-day storyline.
