Production Background

Bleach: Fade to Black is a 2008 Japanese animated supernatural adventure film and the third animated film adaptation of the Bleach anime and manga. Noriyuki Abe directed the movie, with a screenplay credited to Natsuko Takahashi and Masahiro Ōkubo.

The film premiered in Japan on December 13, 2008, between episodes 198 and 199 of the television anime, and was later released in the United States. Its theme song, “Koyoi, Tsuki ga Miezutomo,” was performed by Porno Graffitti.

Franchise Context

Bleach the Movie: Fade to Black is a 2008 theatrical anime film set within the established Bleach universe. It is the franchise’s third animated movie and an original film entry rather than a direct adaptation of a numbered manga storyline. The 94-minute production brings back central figures including Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki, using the series’ Soul Reaper setting, supernatural conflicts, and ongoing character relationships.

As an individual movie, it functions as a side story connected to the main anime continuity rather than as a remake, spin-off series, or new beginning for the franchise. Its placement is identified as between anime episodes 198 and 199, giving it a contextual position during the television series’ run while keeping its focus on a self-contained film narrative. Viewers familiar with Bleach will recognize the returning cast and setting, while the original-story classification distinguishes this movie from a manga-volume adaptation. It follows two earlier Bleach films as the next theatrical installment, but it is not presented as the conclusion of the broader franchise.
