Overview
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Shining Diamond’s Demonic Heartbreak stands out as a meticulously crafted spin-off that bridges the narrative gap between Stardust Crusaders and Diamond is Unbreakable. By focusing on Hol Horse, a memorable supporting figure from the third part, the manga deepens the legacy of DIO's influence while offering a fresh perspective on familiar events. Its existence matters because it demonstrates how side characters can carry a compelling story, expanding the JoJo universe without overshadowing the mainline saga.
The experience is a potent mix of supernatural mystery, action, and Western flair. Set in Morioh a month before the events of Diamond is Unbreakable, the story follows a tense team-up that involves Stand users, a parrot with a past, and a foe tied to The World. Kadono's writing and Karasuma's art deliver a self-contained adventure that balances suspense with the signature bombast of JoJo, all while maintaining a gritty, urban tone.
This manga is approachable for readers who enjoy supernatural action with a cowboy twist, especially those who appreciate stories where reluctant allies must overcome their differences. Longtime JoJo fans will relish the callbacks and character development, but newcomers can also dive in, as the plot provides enough context to follow the mystery. With its seinen sensibilities and three-volume length, it offers a satisfying, focused read available through VIZ Media.
Synopsis
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Shining Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak is a manga spin-off set in March 1999, roughly a decade after DIO's downfall and about a month before the troubles that later surface in Morioh. Its focus is Hol Horse, the pistol-carrying mercenary who once served DIO and who is now trying to rebuild an ordinary working life in the aftermath of those years.
A new commission draws him back into the world of Stand users. The job comes from the mother of Pet Shop's owner, who wants a parrot that was raised alongside the falcon found and brought home, and it sends Hol Horse toward Morioh alongside Boingo, a young Stand user he knows from his old circles and who agrees to the partnership only reluctantly. Once there, the pair cross paths with Josuke Higashikata, still a newcomer to his own Stand and its limits, and with Ryoko, a cousin of Kakyoin who is grieving and hunting for answers of her own.
Hol Horse is troubled by visions of DIO's overwhelming presence, and a shadowy pursuer shadows the group as they try to make sense of what brought them together. Suspicious of one another yet short on options, the four form an uneasy alliance to untangle the mystery they have stumbled into.

Production Background
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Shining Diamond’s Demonic Heartbreak is a manga with a script by Kouhei Kadono and artwork by Tasuku Karasuma. It is a spin-off connected to Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and was serialized in Shueisha’s monthly Ultra Jump magazine. The run began in December 2021, with the saved AniList data listing December 18, 2021 as the start date, and continued until May 2023.
The completed manga spans 16 chapters collected in three tankōbon volumes. Its story is positioned between the third and fourth parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and the work is classified as an original manga spin-off within the broader series. A light novel adaptation, also written by Kadono, followed in June 2023. According to the saved availability information, the manga is available in English through VIZ Media.
Franchise Context
Shining Diamond’s Demonic Heartbreak is a spin-off manga within the larger JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise rather than an entry in Hirohiko Araki’s main numbered storyline. Written by Kouhei Kadono and illustrated by Tasuku Karasuma, it ran in Shueisha’s Ultra Jump from December 2021 to May 2023 and was collected in three volumes. Its placement is deliberately interstitial: the narrative unfolds in March 1999, roughly ten years after Stardust Crusaders and shortly before Diamond Is Unbreakable, allowing it to bridge characters and consequences from those two parts.
Because it is a side story, it does not replace, retell, or continue the primary JoJo arcs in the way a sequel or remake would. Instead, it operates as a franchise expansion that draws on established history while introducing its own cast and mystery. A light novel adaptation, also written by Kadono, followed in June 2023, extending the same branch. For readers navigating the franchise, this work sits alongside the main parts as an optional but connected chapter, best understood after familiarity with the third and fourth parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Franchise Path
- JoJo path: start with Stardust Crusaders for Hol Horse, DIO, Boingo, and Pet Shop context.
- Then read Diamond is Unbreakable for Morioh, Josuke, and the setting this spin-off precedes.
- Shining Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak is an optional spin-off set between Parts 3 and 4, not a mainline replacement.
After You Finish
Continue with
- As a finished 16-chapter spin-off, it has no direct manga sequel; continue with Diamond is Unbreakable for the main Morioh story.
- For more of this branch, read the June 2023 light novel adaptation by Kouhei Kadono.
