Synopsis
The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 picks up with Maomao, a young woman whose training in medicine and pharmacology shapes everything about how she observes the world, once again living as a pharmacist in the pleasure district. With the upheaval surrounding the Shi Clan's rebellion finally settled, her days have returned to a familiar rhythm, until a meal served at the Verdigris House strikes her as somehow wrong. What begins as a quiet suspicion sends her investigating the anomaly and what may lie behind it.
At the palace, Jinshi is grappling with the responsibilities that come with the identity he has finally acknowledged as the Emperor's brother. He is also preoccupied by Loulan's last message, a warning about a coming disaster aimed at the nation. The warning is difficult to dismiss and equally difficult to interpret, leaving him unsettled as he takes on his new duties.
Adding to the unease, whispers spread of a mysterious shrine maiden whose supposed miracles may be a deception, and a dark shadow seems to fall over the country of Li once more. As Maomao's curiosity draws her from the inner court into the city streets and toward lands beyond the border, she and Jinshi are pulled into a mystery whose reach extends well past the walls of the rear palace.

Franchise Context
The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 is a continuation of the anime television adaptation of the light novel series The Apothecary Diaries, written by Hyūganatsu and illustrated by Touko Shino. Within the franchise, it is classified as the main anime installment rather than a spin-off, remake, or alternate version. It follows the first and second seasons and assumes familiarity with the events that came before, so it is not the starting point for newcomers to the series.
The first season aired on Nippon Television and its NNS affiliates from October 2023 to March 2024. A second season followed from January 10 to July 4, 2025. On October 22, 2025, during a special second-anniversary event, a third season was announced for an October 2026 premiere as a split-cour broadcast. That places Season 3 as the next main animated chapter in the franchise after Season 2.
Internationally, Crunchyroll licensed the anime for streaming outside Asia, while Netflix has also carried the title in various regions. The third season remains part of the same ongoing adaptation, drawing from the light novel source material and extending the franchise's main anime timeline rather than existing as a separate story.
Where This Fits in The Apothecary Diaries
A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader The Apothecary Diaries franchise.
Exact position: This is Season 3 and main anime entry 3 of 4. It follows The Apothecary Diaries Season 2.
-
Step 1
Begin with The Apothecary Diaries Season 1 (2023-2024), which introduces Maomao, the inner court, and the mystery structure the later seasons build on.
-
Step 2
Continue with Season 2 (2025), which carries the story through the Shi Clan rebellion and leaves the political situation that Season 3 inherits.
-
Step 3
Treat Season 3 as a direct continuation rather than an optional spinoff or alternate retelling; it opens after Season 2 with Maomao back in the pleasure district and Jinshi dealing with his revealed identity.
-
Step 4
Expect a split-cour broadcast beginning October 2026, so the season may air in separate parts rather than one continuous run, and readers can move to the light novel source for material beyond it.
