Wolverine extends his adamantium claws in the Marvel’s Wolverine story trailer.

Marvel’s Wolverine Story Trailer Reveals Jean Grey, Villains at SDCC 2026

Insomniac Games debuted a new story trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine during a Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2026, giving fans the most detailed look yet at the PlayStation 5 exclusive. The trailer, which drew heavy praise from the audience, lays out the game’s central conflict: Wolverine must protect mutants from extinction, teaming up with Jean Grey and a group called Team X to fight a lineup of classic Marvel villains.

For players who have followed the game since its announcement in 2021, the trailer answers several long-standing questions. It confirms that the story involves Bolivar Trask, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, the Reavers, and the Hand. It also shows that Wolverine’s past as a member of Nathaniel Essex’s Team X plays a major role. The footage balances brutal combat with emotional moments, suggesting the narrative will explore Logan’s memories and his reluctant bond with Jean Grey.

The trailer matters because it establishes the tone and scope of what may be Insomniac’s most story-driven Marvel game yet. The developer confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine takes place on Earth-1048, the same universe as Marvel’s Spider-Man, raising questions about potential crossovers. With a September 15 release date now locked, the SDCC panel gave fans a clear picture of what to expect from Logan’s first solo adventure.

What the New Story Trailer Reveals

The story trailer opens with Wolverine returning to Team X, a group he once worked with alongside Sabretooth, Mystique, and others. The team’s mission is to rescue kidnapped mutants from organizations like the Reavers and the Hand. The footage shows Wolverine fighting Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike, with the latter wielding a glowing sword that may be capable of cutting through adamantium, according to Gizmodo.

The trailer also introduces Leech, a young mutant whose power-nullifying abilities could be a major plot point. ComicBook.com speculates that the mysterious villain Mister Sinister, voiced by Troy Baker, may be the true mastermind behind the threats. However, Insomniac has not officially confirmed Sinister as the main antagonist, so fans should treat that as a theory until the studio clarifies.

We set out to create the ultimate Wolverine game, which meant making sure that we brought to life all the attributes that make this character so beloved. Our Wolverine is cynical, candid, and he keeps people at a distance. Not just because he knows he’s dangerous, but also because he doesn’t want to get hurt again. He’s got a big heart, and that gets him into trouble. – Game director Mike Daly

Jean Grey’s Role and Relationship with Logan

A major focus of the panel was Jean Grey, who Insomniac describes as an unexpected ally that Logan never expected to find. The developers explained that Jean has been trying to build a safe haven for mutants on her own, feeling personally responsible for protecting them. Voice actress Krizia Bajos described Jean as someone who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, even if it makes others uncomfortable.

Liam McIntyre, who voices Wolverine, described the connection between Logan and Jean as both a cosmic and soul connection, suggesting that their partnership will be a core emotional pillar of the story. Collider reported that the two characters each feel something missing inside themselves, and they immediately provide that for each other when they meet. This dynamic marks a departure from typical Wolverine stories and may reshape how players see the character.

This is the biggest honor of my life, and I hope you can trust me with this character. For me, the most important thing is ‘What does it mean?’ When you put the controller down, what does it mean? The fighting’s gonna be good, but we’ve created this really special story too. – Liam McIntyre

Confirmed Villains and Threats

The trailer confirms several classic Wolverine enemies: Bolivar Trask, the billionaire obsessed with mutant control; Omega Red, a deadly Russian mutant; Lady Deathstrike, a cybernetic assassin; and the Reavers and Hand as organized threats. ComicBook.com also notes that Sabretooth, Wolverine’s longtime rival, appears in the trailer and seems to be fighting alongside Logan, though his loyalties may shift.

Gizmodo adds that players will face a variety of enemies across the globe, with the story taking Wolverine to different locations in search of kidnapped mutants. The presence of these villains suggests a campaign that draws heavily from the comics while adapting them to Insomniac’s cinematic style. The panel also confirmed that composer David Fleming, known for his work on Widow’s Bay, is handling the game’s score.

Gameplay, Release Date, and Earth-1048 Confirmation

Insomniac confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine is set in Earth-1048, the same continuity as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. While no direct crossover was teased, the shared universe opens the door for future connections. The game will feature a more linear structure than Spider-Man’s open world, focusing on combat and story. Players can expect to feel the weight of Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton and use his berserker rage and healing factor.

The release date is September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5. As a bonus, players can unlock a costume from Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls by visiting a Japanese arcade, and vice versa. The panel also emphasized that the story will include twists that even avid comic readers won’t predict, promising a fresh take on the character.
