Overview
Initial D is a multimedia franchise represented in Volluble by 24 connected works across 6 media categories. This hub organizes the franchise by release chronology and gives newcomers a clear starting point.
Synopsis
Initial D centers on Takumi Fujiwara, an ordinary high school student in Gunma who helps his father's tofu shop by making early-morning deliveries in a humble Toyota AE86. Without seeking attention, he has mastered the winding mountain roads, especially Mount Akina, through repetition. When local street racers challenge him, his hidden talent pulls him into the underground world of touge battles, where downhill drift racing demands precision, nerve, and machine knowledge. Rivalries with drivers like the Takahashi brothers push him to refine his instinctive style.
The story grows from Takumi's solo challenges into team-based campaigns, most notably Project D, which takes him and his teammates beyond Gunma to face racing crews across Japan. Each stage raises the stakes, introduces new courses and rivals, and explores what it means to balance speed, pride, friendship, and responsibility. The anime spans multiple stages, OVAs, recap films, and reboot movies, while Shuichi Shigeno's original manga remains the foundation.
The franchise later expands into MF Ghost, set years after Initial D, following a new generation of racers on public roads. Even as the focus shifts, the series keeps its core appeal: detailed car culture, underdog determination, and the thrill of a perfect line through a mountain pass.
