Synopsis
Initial D Final Stage is a four-episode anime series that follows Project D, the street racing outfit built around Takumi Fujiwara, into the last competition on its schedule. Takumi has spent years winning downhill battles on the mountain passes of Gunma Prefecture, and the team arrives at this final event with its record and reputation riding on the outcome.
The decisive race sets Takumi against an opponent who also drives an AE86, the same model he has handled since his early days of delivering tofu on the slopes near his home. Matching machines strip away any advantage of hardware, leaving the result to depend on line choice, braking, and nerve on the descent, and the similar cars make the contest feel like a mirror held up to Takumi himself.
Across the short run, the series focuses on that single matchup and the pressure it places on a driver who has rarely been beaten, while the people who have supported Project D watch the team's efforts come down to one last run.

Why It Connects With Audiences
Why people love it
- The same-model AE86 matchup turns the final race into a battle of driving skill rather than machine advantage.
- The mountain-pass setting and drifting focus give the racing a specific, technical identity grounded in the series' established style.
- Keiichi Tsuchiya's editorial supervision on the manga lends the racing material a noted technical grounding that carries into the anime.
- The four-episode format keeps the story tightly on the decisive race and the pressure on Takumi.
Common criticisms
- The four-episode run may feel too brief for a final stage, leaving little room for broader Project D storylines.
- The CGI racing presentation may divide viewers who prefer traditional animation.
- Because it jumps into the final matchup, newcomers may find the character stakes underdeveloped.
- Some may find the AE86 mirror-match premise familiar rather than fresh if they have followed earlier Initial D races.

Production Background
Initial D Final Stage is a four-episode anime television series released in 2014, with each episode running roughly 27 minutes. Its broadcast window fell in the spring season, running from May 16 to June 22 of that year. The work adapts material from the manga Initial D, and it was positioned as the concluding anime entry covering the story's last major race, in which the protagonist faces an opponent driving the same AE86 model.
The underlying manga was written and illustrated by Shuichi Shigeno and serialized in Kodansha's seinen magazine Weekly Young Magazine from 1995 to 2013, with its chapters gathered into 48 collected volumes. The series built its identity around illegal Japanese street racing, concentrating on mountain passes rather than city streets and emphasizing the drifting technique. Professional driver and drifting pioneer Keiichi Tsuchiya contributed editorial supervision to the manga, lending the racing material a measure of technical grounding that carried into the anime's presentation of the sport.
For this final stage, the production retains the automotive focus and rural mountain setting associated with the property, along with its seinen demographic and predominantly male cast. The four-episode format compresses the closing competition into a short, concentrated arc, giving the adaptation a tighter scope than the longer television runs that preceded it.
