Synopsis
Initial D 2nd Stage continues the street racing story centered on Takumi Fujiwara, a young man who delivers tofu for his family shop and has spent years driving the mountain passes near his home before dawn. His ordinary-looking Toyota AE86 Trueno, prepared by his father Bunta, has made him the unexpected downhill ace of Mount Akina, and this stage opens in the wake of his victory over Ryosuke Takahashi, the strategist behind the RedSuns team.
The new challenge comes from the Emperor team, an outfit built around the Lancer Evolution and its four-wheel drive, whose members strip the decals from cars they beat and mount them as trophies. Their leader, Kyoichi Sudo, turns his attention toward Takumi, and the mismatch is plain to everyone: the AE86 gives away power and grip to the Evolutions on both the climb and the descent.
Around Takumi, the Akina Speed Stars, his friend Itsuki, and the Takahashi brothers remain part of his world as he balances a job, school, and a strained relationship with Natsuki. The central conflict is whether his feel for the road and his willingness to push the car beyond its limits can offset machinery that is simply faster, and what that pursuit demands of him.

Production Background
Initial D 2nd Stage is a 13-episode television anime adaptation of Shuichi Shigeno's street racing manga, which was serialized in Kodansha's seinen magazine Weekly Young Magazine. The season aired from October 15, 1999 through January 21, 2000 as part of the fall 1999 broadcast slate, with each episode running roughly 23 minutes. Its title places it as the second stage of the animated adaptation.
The record classifies the work as sourced from manga and tags the season with Cars, Seinen, Primarily Male Cast, Rural, Male Protagonist, Heterosexual, Primarily Adult Cast, and CGI, the last of which marks computer-generated imagery as one of its production elements. Its genre profile spans Action, Drama, and Sports, matching the racing focus of its source material. The 13-episode run is listed as finished.
An English dub was produced for the season, and YouTube is listed among its streaming options.
Franchise Context
Initial D 2nd Stage is a 1999 television anime and a main installment in the Initial D franchise. The franchise began as Shuichi Shigeno's street racing manga, which ran in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from 1995 to 2013 and was collected into 48 volumes. This entry is not a spin-off, reboot, or alternate version. It is a continuation of the anime adaptation, moving the story forward after the first Initial D television series.
Within the franchise timeline, 2nd Stage serves as the second anime stage and one of several television seasons adapting the manga. Its 13-episode run places it among the franchise's shorter chapters, bridging earlier events and later stages. It remains part of the same main anime line rather than a standalone story. Viewers following the franchise are expected to know prior anime events before starting this season.
For the broader Initial D saga, this work functions as a direct sequel season and a link in a long-running animated continuity. It is distinct from the original manga and from other animated entries. As an individual entry, 2nd Stage contributes one segment to the larger franchise rather than representing the whole of Initial D.
Where This Fits in Initial D
A spoiler-light guide to where this exact work fits within the broader Initial D franchise.
Exact position: This is Main anime entry 2 and main anime entry 2 of 5. It follows Initial D 1st Stage.
-
Step 1
Begin with the earlier main Initial D anime storyline, because this 13-episode season opens after a major victory and expects you to know the characters and their racing setup.
-
Step 2
Treat Initial D 2nd Stage as a mainline continuation, not an optional side story, recap, or alternate retelling of the manga.
-
Step 3
Watch it in the franchise's Stage order after the first anime entry and before the later Stage entries, since its events build directly on the prior anime and set up the next competitive challenge.
-
Step 4
If you are coming from the manga, this anime season adapts part of the larger street-racing story, so it fits alongside the source material rather than replacing the full series.
